Default GTB - Heatsink Mod?

Has anyone modified, knows a manufacturer, or would like to make a modified Heat sink for the Novak GTB.

The fins on the heat sink go the wrong way. At one end you have the plugs and the other the power cables - Air blockages. With the fins in the opposite direction and the way I mount it in the car would mean a clear air path and cooler running temps.

The only downside I see is Novak lose a plate to put GTB on.

Here's a pic

but as the fan blows the air down into the fins it doesnt matter,

the air still has to escape though.... so if it's escape route it blocked, then the efficiency of the heatsink and fan is reduced.

You could always carefully drill holes through the fins.....

may be buy a very small amount, doubt you would be able to see any benefit and that would probably void the warranty,

True, the fan does blow but its escape is partially blocked. I do believe that it would make a considerable difference.

I was thinking of dremel cutting a line down the middle? Might do it this weekend. Take a measure before and after and see if it makes any difference.

But the warranty is so short, it's expired by the time I open the box

my guess and i have tried stuff like this before is about 2-3 degrees max,but good luck let us know when its done and how you measured the temps before and after.

Shall do. Would prefer the fins aligned, but at least it will be an idea. It's not a performance mod as I wouldn't know what to do with extra speed or run time????

I do know that without the fan it's about 40-50 degrees different As I found out this weekend. Will not be doing that again. Was very surprised the thermal cut off didn't kick in Both motor and ESC registered 210F, (+/-10) at their peak.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep you posted.

you also got to consider where the fan is sucking it's air from.... if you got a sealed shell, then it will be using warm air to cool the heatsink, if it has direct fresh air coming in, it will be more thermally efficient again.

But we are still only talking a few degree's.

I know the GTB is one of the few ESC to monitor motor temperature, but it doesn't tell you what it is ? How did you record the temperatures?

Can you tell me more about this uprated fan as a couple of blades fell off my standard one (even though it's well protected and in a touring car!), thanks

Hi Radish, its a 25mm fan sold by Novak, it is very very good and strong and plugs straight in to the fan socket. It has to mount by only 2 screws as it doesn't sit square on the heatsink. If you want even more cooling then cut the plug off and solder the fan wires directly to battery positive and negative.

This will give constant cooling as long as batteries plugged in, and the fan will run at battery voltage (8.4v if Lipo) and not 6v that the ESC fan socket gives.

Alternatively, remove the fan and mount it vertically direct to the chassis (observing the directional arrows on the fan of course..) at the side of the speedo... works for me...

Yes, the blades fall off the Novak fan, #5651 this is for the 2 in a pack, they do supply 1's but I don't have the number.

I have recently purchased a heat gun. It has about +/-3 degrees of accuracy. As soon as the car comes off the track, I whip the shell off and take a reading of both the ESC and Motor Temps.

I have installed an old monster fan I bought from a guy here on Oople. (Bit like the Muchmore one) Black with big fans. - Just had a look at the one Chris mentions - Pretty much identical to that.

The normal clear ones from Novak tend to stick up a little, just enough to catch on anything sitting close to it.

I have holes in the shell and due to the internal layout and shell type it blows fresh air straight onto the motor (Motor is at the front). And air for the ESC is fresh too and forced right on to the top of it. I will be making the inlet holes slightly bigger (but can't mess with the aeshetics too much.

Thanks guys, I'll try and get one of those. I don't have a temperature problem, just frustrated that the blades fall off for no reason (not good on a near £200 system!)
Cheers
