Default Alternative X-6 setup

Hello dear oOplers,

it seems that most of the time, the UK drivers use the Ellis setup, the Oswestry one, with minor adaptations.
Of course I tried it, but I'm not very satisfied with the handling (sorry Ellis!). I feel the back of the car is too soft, it collapses on-power, even with harder oil and an antiroll bar.

Well, I tried this new setup, developed by the american driver Jeremy Felles and X-Factory's (and B-mag friend ) Paul Sainclair : http://www.2wdrc.com/pdfs/Setup-2009...line-Axles.pdf

I found it really good, even on my tight astro track. Lots of steering in and out, great stability.
The only tweaks I made to adapt it to the astro was using heavier springs (AE greens front and AE grays rear), E-speed hangers and of course Minipins.

I'd really like to hear from others that tried or want to try it.

Edit : or any thoughts!

Hi Gayo

Did you test it on the MA's track?

Well, that's the only place where I tested it. I'm still slightly faster with the B4, but the X-6 is by far easier to drive and consistent, and I only made 1 pack with each. Tyres were washed too.
B4 fastest lap : 22.07
X-6 fastest lap : 22.15

Looks a lot like Northys 5 cell setup form 2 years ago. I hated that, but I'll give this one a go.

GAYO: Do you think you could do a setup sheet of the final setup you had please?

Also, what weight are you running the car?

Here it is, but remember I only tried it a couple of times and there are for sure lots of refinements to be made.
I think the crucial parts are the shock positions and the use of 20° caster blocks.
I used AE shocks to save the Losi ones with the Ellis setup.

Here comes another benefit of this setup. I don't like the idea of ballasting (is that a word?) a race car with 250g+! So I used only around 85g on the front of the car (see the notes) and it feels rather good. The car overall weights 1550g with a 280g lipo.

Hi Gayo,

I'm using the AE shocks aswell.

if youre using good front tires and dead rears you might want to try to use 4wd front tires in the rear (old pic)

About the lead. Try it and decide for yourself

These are the base setups i'm using now ( non squared )

Thanks for the ideas, Janus! I'd really like to see your Losi Universals

Elvo has shown me pics, they are nice in a Frankenstein kind of way.

Chris Long and I ran the 4wd front minipins on rear of car at the Belgium GP this year though apparently Janus has been trying this for a long time. We (and others) really liked it, I seem to remember Elvo dissaproved though

For me dremeled front tires and 4wd rears have been the way to go at Kampenhout for about 5 years now. By now most others seem to mess up their front tires aswell, or give them to me to do it for them ( hi Dan ), but the 4wd rears need a mild bit of insanity. But it works......

Elvo and I rarely use similar setup’s, to much difference in driving style. Elvo actually drives the car and I just toss it into corners

I found the set-up Gayo has pointed to had a very different feeling than what I've run on my X - 6 before. The best way I can describe it is that it feels very front-leading instead of rear-following. That is, instead of driving the car by focusing on the rear end and where its going, I was able to put the front end of the car where I wanted it on the track and the rear end just followed along nicely. That's not to say the rear end lacked forward bite or washed out all the time - the whole car just drove very precisely. I think a large part of this feeling was the 20* blocks up front.

I did not have great success with the car on a more slippery track though and have since gone back to running with 30* blocks; in fact currently I'm very close to what Brian and Dan Griffin have been running (see the set-up page: http://www.2wdrc.com/tech/SetupSheets.htm). We've found these set-ups develop exceptional traction on lower-bite surfaces but still feel pretty good when the grip levels come up.

BTW, since the CRCRC race we here in the states have been running our Squared cars "light" - no weight in the car except for 20 to 50 grams up front. Most of our cars are around 65% rear weight, 1550 total.

@Paul:
I will gonna test on slippery clay as soon the track is a bit dried after the winter so any advice for a starting setup for low grip is helpful.

Comparing Brian's an Dan's Setup I cannot see any direction how to set the car as nothing on both cars is the same beside misc..
Beside the fact, that LOSI and AE shocks are in use the geometrie, caster, mounting positions of shocks are completely different.

That means for me starting at zero for low-grip.

I am using Lipo with the intension to avoid as much weight as possible. I don't want to stiffen the car for jump-landing because of the weight.

Thanks
Norbert

Elektrobuggy -
I run on a very slippery clay hard-packed track all the time in the US. Try my setup for starters, it makes awesome traction but might not steer enough for some. If there are lots of jumps, try smaller hole pistons, I recently ran 56/30 wt front with 57/22.5 rear and the car was more settled over jumps and bumps.

Thank you very much Dan - I highly appreciate your answer.

I will set my car acc. to yours as a starting point and give it a go.

I beat my own 2WD track record with worn tyres (21.16 if someone asks), so this setup is not too bad for me

Thanks for all the valuable inputs, guys, much appreciated. oOple rulz
