Default 501x Built, but still a few questions

After getting my 501x back in november and waiting for my 5.5t brushless combo to arrive in the post... then not having pinions deep enough.. Last night I set about getting my 501x ready to race at Bury..

The electrics install was such a pain, in the end I used teh ariel fitting to hold the esc and servo wires under the belt and then bring them up to fit in the Receiver.

So by then end of the evening the car was doign mini drag runs in the lounge

Anyway there are a few issues that I would appreciate if any of you guys can answer, its been a while since I raced buggies so some of these might sound a bit soft.

the set-up is 17t pinion, front one way and ez-run 5.5t brushless with gp4300's

1) The Gears are meshed correctly, but the car seems loud compared to my touring car (which does run finer 0.4 pitch gears). Its not so bad going forward, but in reverse (even slowly) it sounds like a tractor. Could it be the slipper clutch being too soft / hard? The motor is brushless so its silent when not meshed.

2) The servo / esc wires are going under the ariel mount to keep them from the belt, this seems fine, however could I get interferance or juttering?

3) The car would just cut out and stop randomly, I know the esc will stop when the car looses signal or over heats but this was in my lounge after around 30 sec to 1 min of drivng. It doesnt seem to do it if I run it for ages with no load, only under load. (I only have one old set of saddle packs so it could be them, so to test i am making some more saddle packs to see if its just a bad pack)

4) The steering doesnt always centre 100%, the servo / transmitter is fine (its a KO and I use it for my TC which is pin-sharp) the mechanism is free when unconnected to the servo. The only thing that I think it might be is the (losi ball cups) or the tamiya servo saver (which as much as I like tamiyas are a bit poor).

thats it, (for now), just need to convince the wife to look after the kiddies next week so I can race my car...

Not sure I can help with 1-3 (although for info I run the servo/esc wires against the underneath of the top deck!) but with the servo yes I found there was always play in the tamiya servo saver which effectively gave it two different centrepoints!

My solutions to this (in order of what I tried) was:

1. Glued the servo saver. Worked ok as a heavy impact broke the glue, so still protected the servo! However, then need to keep gluing!

2. Put plastic from parts bags in the servo saver join to "tighten it". Only ever worked ford little while and not 100%!

3. Stopped using the servo saver!

Didn't think Tam servo saver fitted KO by the way!?

indeed, the Tamiya ones dont seem great.. I thought it would all be ok with the hi-torque one but I know they can come loose. (KO is the same fitting as acoms btw, so thats why it fits).

I'll slap on a kimborough one and test it.

Hi buddy
dont use a servo saver they just create an unpredictable steering response.
you should have a near silent mesh! It sounds like you have either a faulty pinion or spur. Not a problem though i will happily give you a new one at bury.
as for your wiring running signal leads under the ariel mount is fine, but make sure your power/motor leads are away from them.
as for your Brushless cutting out i am only guessing. It it set for lipo if so and your cells were not charged that could be the lipo fail safe kickin in. Also just check your wiring, in particular if your Brushless has a sensor lead make sure it has no breaks in it and is properly connected.
I am sorry if i am teaching you to suck eggs though.
if you need any help(and a pinion) come and see me at bury next week.
Hope this helps
steve

It could be the lipo cut-off if the pack was bad, I know I had a pack with a dead cell and even fully charged under load it would cut with the lipo cutoff.

Throw the tamiya servo saver in the bin and either don't use one or buy a kimbrough.

I've noticed my 501 (and everybody else's at the club) is louder than my xray although it certainly isn't what I would consider as 'loud' just a bit noisier, no idea about reverse.

I've solved the cut-off It was just the batteries, Ive made a new pack and the car is fine I've also cycled the pack that played up and they seem to be fine also (they hadnt been used for about a year)

The meshing doesnt sound that bad I suppose. The pinion is brand new and the spur seems to be near new. Its just that my TC is near silent (ta05ms) but this is louder but the pitch is larger so there will be more contact.

The car still seems a bit clunky in reverse though.

Cheers for the offer to look at the car, I will take you up on that Unfortuantley it may have to be at the march meeting now as my wife is away and coming back at Midday on the Sunday so I cant really be in Bury racing my car I might pop down first thing though to take a look and could bring the car with me

Whilst testing it indoors today it hit the childrens Chalkboard and obliterated it!! Luckily the wife was out so daddy managed to fix it and bribe the kiddies with a milky way...
