Default Stung for import duty

Got mail this morning from DHL - outstanding import duty on an ebay purchase from HK some weeks ago - it's the first time ever that I have been 'got'.

I'm not actually too bothered, even with all duty & fees paid I'm still up by 1/3rd on UK RRP - (that's approx £300 in this case).

Is this just bad luck or have things been tightened up?

Everything ive ever had delivered through DHL has been 'got'.

All my Upgrade-RC stuff, which arrived in seperate boxes, recieved £20ish charges. My M11 recieved a £50 charge.

Each letter took about 2 weeks to arrive, and apparently its commen for DHL to do so.

(As far as I am aware) they ensure that all parcels that they handle are rushed through customs, but also ensure that they are all processed by customs...therefore upping the amount of 'handling fee' that thye recieve.

Buggers.

I once heard it was because of what you bought. There again if you've paid £900 for something then you iz gonna get done .

This is the most expensive thing I have had shipped - so maybe.

£900 UK RRP.
£500 HK price paid.

The seller has a 'import duty refunded' policy so I will be claiming it back - if I am successful then thats a bonus.

"The Man" may be watching this but seeing as the exchange rate is now so crap I'm not bothering to import what little I need, I don't care.

I've only ever been got once from Towerhobbies in the States when I ordered a load of mainly small RC10 bits. Presumably they noticed on that occasion because A) the soft sods packed the 2 bodyshells in a box that looked like it could have contained a fully-assembled rocket launcher and B) it had a customs label showing the value of the items inside it as $128, which was in all fairness spot on.

To be honest, I think we generally do OK from Hong Kong as everything I've ever bought from that market always says "25 dollar" on the label, which really was pushing it ever so much for that Tamiya F350 Hilift kit and radio gear last year .

I think it depends on who you purchase from and what system they use to send it. I know some firms don't fill out the customs forms correctly....

I want to know what you have spent £500 on! You are the tightest person I know!

I've only ever known you spend that amount of money on a full size car! If you've imported one of those, I think they'd notice

At the moment import duty begins at anything over the value of £18..
the postal service handling the package will also charge you for them paying customs on top of the duty.
some hong kong sellers falsify the green label but it is an offence for the Usa sellers to do so ,they risk a fine and/or prison..so you just take your chance that they do not notice every package.
Whats annoying is that if the oversea,s sellers can make a decent profit on low prices why do our own shops rip us off

I don't think they do. You always pay more for personal customer service and you can get your hands on the stuff there and then.

and you have comeback if somthing goes wrong

having gone the import route before and had to wait for goods then drive a 40 mile round trip to collect and pay extra handling charges etc etc the savings were about 10-15 % on the uk price ( excluding the ball ache of the 40 mile trip and the fuell used)

I get my stuff from the uk now unless its only available as import and as I drive ae cars use novak futaba trakpower and demon I have no real nead to go outside the uk
