Default Schumacher Mini Spike

Hi guys,

Just a quick question. I ran yellow mini spikes on my car last weekend for the first time (2WD). The first few runs were brilliant and consistent in terms of the grip they gave but then on the 5th run they were horrendous. One moment I had grip and the next I was spinning out for no apparent reason except perhaps that the tyre had lost it's "sweet spot"?
Is this normal? Obviously the spike, to look at, isn't badly worn at all as you would expect from a tyre that had only done a few runs. How many meetings would you normally get from this tyre?

if your running on med/ high grip astro expect two sets of rears per meeting and 1 set stagger ribs on the front (yellow)

my son used that on his first ever regional on an astro track am sure others will give you different opinions but thats what we used
plus ballistic buggy green minispike rears when astro was damp

Stagger ribs are fine and I can get quite a few meetings from them. Same with the BB Greens. Just shocked that a tyre with seemingly little wear would actually have no performance left in it.

A new set on my car is good for around 15 min on high grip before the grip becomes inconsistent. They still work well indoors on slippy floor for a couple meetings after that.

Thanks for that, it raises a further question. I'm curious as to why people would choose mini spikes over mini pins. From my limited experience, the mini pin is just as good on dry astro seem and has a much better wear rate.

I guess that's dependent on the astro - pins are noticeably slower at RHR due to having much less grip.

Also, at club/non-sanctioned meetings, most people will run the same types of tyres allowed at Regional/National events.

As has been said, if the astro pile is too long, pins just don't work.

On mini spikes, generally once the flat has started to wear (no more sharp edges), handling can start to suffer. This usually equates to running a couple of sets per meeting.

I try to get the full meeting out of a pair of yellow rears if it's only a club day (2-3 pairs for regionals and nationals) but have noticed that I'm struggling to make it through the 4 rounds and final if it's a particularly warm day and the sand comes up through the astro, this kills tyres.

As a previous poster said unfortunately the window of top performance with a yellow minispike is prob 10-15 mins, when the spikes start to round off performance will noticeably decrease.

My technique to make rears last longer is to balance them with the fronts. When my rears go in 2wd I just put a set of worn fronts on (yellow minispikes). You wont have the same ultimate grip level as a new set obviously but the difference isnt huge IMO and it reduces the oversteer a lot.
