how do you decide what cateogry you like and stick with it?

I currently drive 2wd buggy and Tamiya Mini at few clubs, I used to drive GT12, 1/10 touring car. Problem is I like racing them all as I found them fun. I don't compete at national level because I'm not good enough.

I cant afford to have all cars and attend all clubs for different class. So how do you stick to one class or two?

I am very tempted to race those 1/12 scale pan car and GT12 class...

More seriously, if you want to race all those classes, and you aren't very good, just buy second/third/fourth hand or base spec cars. Buy electronics that you can use in multiple cars.

Then you can try them all.

I could have as much fun with a car that cost me a quarter of what my current favourite owes me, it'd just be a bit slower, and a bit cheaper to fix when i break it.

In my experience you don't decide which class you favour, it decides for you. As you go through your racing life, things change.

I've gone from 12th in 1976 through Off-Road to TC and then back to 12th in 2003.

Nowadays my challenge is to drive an error-free heat, and be competitive with my peers in the finals. I have no pretensions to winning anything, so I need cars I can control; that I can place on the track and I can race with.

In my early competitive days I raced different classes to try and win - 12th because that's all the electric there was, Off-Road because it was different and TC because it appealed to me for chassis development in the early days.

Now I want something my mental capacity can handle, reliable, rewarding for my limited driver skills and reasonable costs. I want a test of driving skill so LMP12 is the one to go for. I also want something easy to use at the club so GT12 offers that is spades. I want to race indoors and not get wet or cold. As I said, the classes choose me, not the other way round.

Whatever you do, don't make a choice. Take the car that makes you feel good on the day. As time passes you will find one class attracts you more than the other, and that's where you will most likely end up. It's all about a fun day out!
