I wouldn't use anything that leaves a residue or claims to lubricate, especially on any ball diff parts. I use brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner, there all pretty much the same and safe.

I fill up the sink, get the main gear and scrub it with soap and an old toothbrush. I do the same with the plates. Then just soak the balls for 5 minutes, put them in my tub of HB grease and shake it to make sure each one is coated for the rebuild. The main gear and plates are dried with a hairdryer (don't tell my parents about any of this!).

Brake cleaner all the way, try to get the type that comes in a 5 litre can and apply it with a trigger spray as it's more economical than aerosols.
Get a load of cheap paintbrushes and cut the bristles down, according to how much you cut off you can make the bristles more aggressive so they really get into the pockets where the diff balls sit when it's assembled. Also wear latex gloves to protect your hands ![]()

Parts in with some washing up liquid, timer on, sit in front of telly.

Brake cleaner for metal parts, for plastics I use a toothbrush and dish soap. Though most materials of gears can (probably) handle a bit of brake cleaner, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I never had to rebuild a diff on sight though, that will be brake cleaner all the way
