at a guess i would say that it was the sensor board that caused a short

One of the three screws that hold the sensor board in will be touching the solder on the end of the windings, dremel the screws down so they sit flush with the c shaped sensor board retainer and it should be fine.

Mechanical resistance, as you have described could be a shot bearing, but most likely a disintegrated rotor magnet.
strip the motor down and investigate, you may just need to replace the rotor.

Oh, you stripped it down already. Did check bearings spin freely?

yea checked the bearing and the rotor moves freely, seems when powers on there is a electric resistance. ill check the screws aint touching wiring. then first checked ie when took it of track the lil puf of smoke when reving did come from back of motor. i mean iv had the motor for a year now and been fine

does it have a burnt smell to it
could have cooked the sensor board if you know some1 with a core widget to check the sensor

"bits of metal" is most likely to be solder!! smoke is most likely to be wire insulation breaking up and melting, which in turn will cause some resistance to turn the motor over if the 3 coils are no longer "balanced" from a resistance perspective. In short, I'd guess it's dead.
