Without meaning to sound offensive if you need to ask what version of photoshop you need you probably don't need photoshop. It's a massive program and therefore expensive so unless you're planning on earning money from it it might be best to get something else ?

You need to ask yourself what you need it for ?

If it's literally just for your own personal photography can you use Photoshop Elements which is considerably cheaper and a cut down version of the full program.

If you want to use if with your 3D programs you can get an enhanced 3D version which works well and has some extra features.

If it's just for general stuff you could use GIMP - Gnu Image Manipulation Program, it's open source software and completely free and will do just as much as photoshop, so if you're not going to use it every day save yourself six hundred quid and download GIMP for free.

If you are set on Photoshop go to Adobe's site and download the 30 day trial and see how you get on with it.

Latest version is CS6, but as has been said even elements is pretty comprehensive for a new user. (or even an old one)
