Default How do you change drive pins?

I have a 210 and the drive pins on the dog bones are looking a bit flat on one side.

Im thinking about swapping them for new ones, same with the outdrives and am wondering how do you take them out and put in fresh ones?

I will also look at doing the 410 as well when the need doing.

Is there a good tool?
A DIY tool?

I've done it in the past replacing them with needle bearing rollers, blow lamp the pin end sometimes they pull.out with pliers sometimes they need tapping out. Put the pins in the freezer, re heat the dogbone, slide the pin in.


Can't remember which car it was but kept having the pins come out so drilled the end of the shaft tapped it and put a grub screws in, ground a flat on the pin never came out again.

My 210 gear diff outdrives needed changing so I did that and thought Id try the drive pins.
I took a pinion placed the drive pin in the opening and gave it a few gentle taps with a hammer.
I then thought about replacing them as they were quite flat on one side then had a idea about swapping them over left to right etc.

This posed another issue that it might act strange when I go to brake so before I replaced and while they were nearly the whole way oout I twisted them 90° ( with my teeth.. joke) Now they are like new and fit very nicely just like new

I think its pretty cool to beable to reuse something that becomes perfectly fine. New drive shafts don't grow on trees either

Flat spots aren't such an issue, they'll occur relatively quickly (less surface area to wear down in the beginning, and that surface area carries more pressure because it's smaller). It's when they wear so far down that they only have half the diameter left that you should think about replacing them (actually I'd start doing that bby 2/3rds just to be sure, even though the DEX210 has quite beefy drive pins compared to some competitors' cars).

Should only take 5 mins to do both, maybe 10 if you have to get the shafts out completely. Saves 25 quid.

a guy called Dave grunil also makes a good one which i have, go to a good bearing suppliers and the pins are pence (do not hear the shaft it alters the hardness and can stretch the hole)
i can get you daves contact info if you wish.
defo worth doing i saved £££'s by changing pins in my xray ic drive shats and once you have the tool and pins other will pay to save £'s
