Er...I don't think you need to particularly change firmware.

I thought you could just switch it off using a program box?

That's what I do when I run a 4wd with 8.5t.

I have the Xtreme ESC and it came with the control box. I upgraded the laptop software to v3.1 which in turn I upgraded the LCD box firmware to 1.08_120504 not the later 1.11 unless you have a v3 ESC and then the ESC firmware to the latest Ver v3.0_110930STOCK or v3.0_110930_MOD. You can set everything via the lcd box then.

Firmware 408 disables all timing and puts it into 'Blinky' mode.

I just got a Bullistorm esc which runs the same software as the Xe/Ezrun esc`s and i love the boost and turbo timing. Never had that before and on our track its awesome. Just the right amount of speed for the infield , then full blast down the straight. I`d leave it and try it. If you dont like it you can just turn it off.

I'm not sure if this still counts, but it use to be, always flash the software twice. That is twice to the ecs and twice to the control box just to make sure the software takes. Plus always recalibrate your hand set every time you change firmware.
If you search u-tube there is a very good step by step tutorial on how to down load, onto the Hobbywing gear
