Default Upgrade or buy new?

Chaps, question for you.

I have quite a heavily upgraded ZX5, bought it about 18 months, 2 years ago and quickly modded the hell out of it with the Atomic Carbon bits, KMC conversion and I think it was the LAW34 new back end kit, shock kit update (still leaked though), TI screw set etc etc the list goes on. (I should get a pic of it really...)

Anyway, I've been away from racing for just over a year and have come back to the fold only to find that there is a new version out (very exciting!). I was thinking about chopping in the ZX for a different car but I quite like being the only lazer at my club and being as I'm an old school ZXR driver from years back I have a huge soft spot for anything ZX. (theres a nice ZXRR on ebay at the moment... )

To my question!

Is it worth updating my current car which would cost about £110 or just buying a new kit and transfering the upgraded parts over selling off what I don't need?

Cheers

Mike

If the car is in good condition then keep it and upgrade.

All you NEED is to get the LAW35 kit to convert the car to SP geometry which is the biggest and most important change ...... makes the car truely world class. Not sure on the cost but around the £60 mark IIRC.

If you sell the KMC chassis and go back to the stock one you will get a better handling car, the ability to share set-ups with the rest of us ZX5-SP runner and probalby have enough cash to cover the LAW35 kit.

I am not sure how you managed to get the tripple cap shock upgrade to leak though. I hav enow built about 6 sets of these (4 for me, 2 for friends) and can honestly say, hand on heart, that they are the smoothest, easiest to build and most leak free shocks I have every built in any scale of RC.
If you need help with them give me a shout and I'll go through the build proceedure with you.

I thought that aswell Wraggy until last weekend at eastrax and the dreaded breaking top deck occurred and I didnt even crash for it to happen. Ball joint was tight and threadlocked and had a large washer either side of the top deck!!...and it still snapped without even a crash. As far as being to wide, mine was too wide at worksop with minipins on and at the weekend with minispikes it was slighty narrower but still borderline according to Charlie Fraser.

Mine did fit in but it had to be pushed in! I mangaed to get away with just pushing it in myself while scruitineering werent looking and got away with it! lol. At eastrax Charlie said that they had failed loads of B44 for being too wide. Dont really know how you can make it narrower though?

My guess is that those B44s that don't fit in the box were running Losi wheels with B44 front hexs rather than the (ultra hard to find) B44 frotn wheels.

Anyway, can we please limit responses to the threads in the Kyosho section to those relevent to Kyosho car. Would be appreciated.

The ZX5-SP is a great car and I have yet to find anybody that would say anything negative about it after driving one ..... it drives very differently to the original ZX5!!

Sorry to go back to the B44 for a second: at the local club, Guido Kraft (GM team driver) uses adapted XXX CR rear hubs to get the width in the rear right (252 mm prior to his conversion!)

According to Supergreg, who has the old Lazer ZX-5, the SP (he tested mine) has much more steering and seems more balanced. The SP has much more droop, in mid-air it reminds me of a 1/8th scale buggy...

Thanks for all your replies guys, I have come to a decision!

I've done something that's going to upset Roger I think and ordered a B44... My main reason for this is the guy I'm going to be going racing with has also ordered one so we can share spares and setups etc. Also my local club is all about the B44 as it's Craig Harris' home of Caldicot with his Atomic 44...

Hopefully this summer we are going to try and attend a few of the local clubs in the mid west region as the scene in Wales is no where near as big, Ledbury looks like they have a really good outdoor track thats not too far from Cardiff!

I'm not going to sell the ZX though, well I may split the KMC parts from it and get the SP upgrade and use the car as a spare. If anyone is interested in a KMC conversion drop me a PM, its completely unmarked as its only ever been used indoors.

Thanks guys!

Mike
