Default Help with Beginner Racing Buggy

Hi Guys,

I am just stating to get into racing and am looking for a good entry level 2wd racer.

I have come across the ansmann range and like the look of both the mad monkey and the x2.

http://www.jespares.com/electric-mod...tegory_id=1150

http://www.modelsport.co.uk/ansmann-...products/39323

But which would you guys recommend? If I could afford it I would opt for the Associated RC10B4.1 but it is a little over budget once I add the battery etc.

If neither of these are any good can anybody point me in the right direction? I just want to get it right first time!!!

Thanks in advance.

I would go for the X2c of your budget allows. You could always buy a second hand car, but before you buy anything get down to your local club and see what everyone else is running!!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, I was going to wait for the next club event and go down but I am keen to get a kit and start building.

I will be joining kidderminster club and I guess I will just be bashing for a while before racing. If anybody is on here from Kiddy can you gove me some car buying tips???

Thanks

You know that Kiddy don't run regular meets (yet) don't you?

I say yet as myself and another eager chap are keen to get something running in the spring. We currently meet at the track with sons for a practice occasionally.
At the moment they run regional and national events and the Midlands Astro Masters in collaboration with Coventry.

The Mad Monkey is a great starter car but you will probably find yourself wanting to upgrade key things fairly early on (the shocks are notoriously weak). By the time you've changed the shocks and added bearings, you won't be far off the cost of a X2.

If I was buying now, I'd consider the X2 or X2C unless budget was tight.

Hey,

No I didn't know that! I would be keen to help out on regular meets etc as really want to get my eldest son involved soon too. Can you access the track at anytime apart from events?? I have found the X2 kit for £99.00 which leaves me £100-120 to get the rest of the kit... can you share any advice on motor I was looking at http://www.modelsport.co.uk/etronix-...products/39697 but only because it came in the pro kit with the Mad Monkey.

Thanks for the advice in advance, Do you get down the track much or do you go somewhere else?

Cheers

Dave

There's a MAM series meeting at Kiddy on the 19th Feb. Why not come down, meet the racers and see what cars they are running.
You will be made welcome and all the Kiddy crew will be there.

Buy a 2nd hand car , B4, X6 Or losi 22 they are all cheap now and seem to be the strongest for starting out.

In the same boat but 2nd hand doesn't seem to work out much cheaper after you've bought electrics and radio gear. Yes you're ultimately getting better kit but it's always just over budget.

I spend a fortune on my own car and it's half as complicated as RC :-(

As a club member (of the club and BRCA) you are free to use the track whenever you want. We have managed once since christmas but the weather hasn't been favourable!

Let us know when you're set up and perhaps we can all arrange to meet.

I don't know about the Etronix kit I don't think it is rated highly. Loads of people on here rate Hobbywing as a great budget set-up and many prefer it to more expensive offerings.

I'd go with this suggestion a second hand B4, Losi 22 or Cougar SV would be the way to go. I think in a couple of weeks they will be lots of cougar in the for sale section as people upgrade to the new one.

Thanks for all the advice, VintageRacer I will be there on the 19th in the morning if you are going down we could meet up then?

I have been offered an x2c for £110 and it has various spares etc with it but no running gear etc. I have also been offered a b4 for £200 this comes with brushed motor and can be seen here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Team-Assoc...#ht_1693wt_932

Thoughts please....

Thanks

Yes, I'm planning to be there on the 19th, my son is driving.

If it were my money I'd get the X2C and something like these (not saying get these actual items, just giving examples of what can be bought at a good price used).

Radio £40
http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92872
(or you can pick up a Core or Etronix 2.4GHz for around the same money)

One of these Lipos £40
http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92810

Motor and Speedo £60 (or £40 if you get the cheaper ESC and it can handle the motor)
http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92589

Just need a servo to get to the B4 set-up equivalent. A decent servo will cost around £20-40 used.
This way, you will be much more up-to-date, I know you'll spend a bit more money, but you won't be wanting to change things so quickly.

The ebay B4 looks to be a nice car but the electrics are old. The brushed motor, esc and NiMH cells are not worth much, except to get you going. I wouldn't place much value on them if I were you.

Default New Vs Old

I have had a think and buying a new kit seems to be about the same as second hand so I think Im going to go for a Cougar @ only £129.97 it seems like a lot more of a car compared to the X2c.

Is this a wise choice? I know it will cost more in the long run but I think the overall end result will be a lot more pleasing to me. Knowing I have built it from scratch is something that I would like.

I will pm you my number VintageRacer and we will meet on the 19th.

Just had a look on ebay and found this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/losi-22-bu...item3cc1caaab4

All you need is a lipo and your good to go.

Hi Alex,

Yeah want something a little newer than the B4 will see how I get on with this Losi 22 when the guy emails me back.

The Losi was my first choice when I started looking around but then saw the price!

I really want a new one so I can build it up but I guess as its my first one I will go 2nd hand and then I can always upgrade at a later date.

Just to stir things up a bit: a B4.1 RTR brushless comes with a 2.4Ghz, a brushless sport esc, and a 3300kV motor. (check out modelsport uk 209£)

A setup suetable for most beginners.

Another cheap 2s lipo (flightmax from hobbyking) or two, a lipo capable charger(b6ac from the bay) with balancing functions and 8 penlites and you're ready to gooooooooooo.
