Default Quite the surprise

My parents recently came and visited. This was quite nice. I am a parent and as they are grand parents they were quite happy to visit and see their grandson and son.

Right before they flew in from out of town, my mother calls me to say that she recalls seeing an RC car box in the garage. I asked her to take a look at it explaining that maybe it might be a nice project for me and my son (who is five btw).

She examines over the phone, "the box reads R-C Ten, Graphite. RC10 Team Car." At my instruction she opens the box and inventories the contents, "a car, with a body I believe you painted 20 years ago." "It has four wheels, one of which is not connected but in the box."

I naturally tell her to bring it with. Because of the tightness of her packing, she decides it easier to ship.

The box arrives. Look at the images and you will understand my surprise.

Definitively going to restore it. I'll buy a repro body and give it a nice paint job.

Not sure though whether I will make it pure shelf queen or will try to make it a runner as well.

As you can likely see from the picture with the body off, its missing the motor mount and the whole center assembly. So to get it into running shape might take a bit. I don't have the instructions so I am not sure exactly what I am missing.

I know that there should also be a top brace as well. The box has two belt tensioners.

All the shocks are present and in fact there are two extra (could be Associated/Kyosho from the same period).

So I will start cleaning it up regardless of how far I take it in the end. If anyone has any knowledge of what is missing in the middle, and suggestions of where to get needed parts, that would be handy. I can check ebay etc too.

It would be really fun to get it into running order - even if to take it on "Sunday drives."

Oh, for those who are not quite as old as I, this is an original YZ 10.

The manual is on oople, 870c, but same car except for the body.
http://www.oople.com/rc/manuals/yz870c/

That version doesn't use the top brace, only the angle fibreglass with the belt tensioner mounted off that. It's not much good though, the car flexes enough to lose all belt tension on the front. Also there are no holes for attaching the top deck to the bulkhead caps. You can drill them to mount a top deck but I tried that on mine and they just cracked in the first 5 mins of running.

This is why I love the oople community so much. So much friendly knowledge.

There is an aluminium motor mount for a YZ 10 870 on ebay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-10-ALUMINU...#ht_500wt_1180

This should fit my YZ 10? yes/no?

Finding a back brace or whatever you call the fiberglass spine may prove difficult. I will also need a center dif or whatever its called. Hence again, may just clean it up to the point of display. Will start a bit today and take pics. Everyone can watch what will prove to be slow progress . . . !

Your Yz10 is pretty much identical to the Yz870c except for the top deck. I has a Yz870c back in the day and upgraded it to Yz10 spec.
The top deck off later versions will fit - not authentic of course but it might be your best chance.

Likewise you can use the centre pulley off of later versions - though you will need to change the belts and diff pulley's as the Works'91 onwards used a different belt pitch.

The motor mount will fit. For the centre shaft you can use the works 92 (3mm pitch belt) and the newer YZ10 shaft. You can also use most of the YR4 series centre shafts but not all.

These will fit

Your best bet is to join RC10 talk, they have an excellent vintage yokomo section and when you have reached a certain amount posts you will be able to join the trading section.
