go easy, first time shell painter here
![]() doing a scheme on a shell, where i have black on the top half of the body - using a pre applied mask, which has a border. Will paint the black etc, pull the border of the mask, paint silver, then paint the middle thats the easy bit on the bottom half off the body, i'd like white as the main colour (which will be comlpetely masked prior to painting the black/top half) what i'd like on the bottom is a pre-applied mask/decal with a border, so do i do the following... (after finshing the top half of the shell) 1) remove the masking (leaving the decal/mask) 2) paint white 3) remove the border of the mask/decal and paint black - this is where my query lies 4) remove middle and paint light blue/purple etc what ever colour i decide basically the bottom half of the shell is inverted from the top, but i've read that painting the black (for the mask/decal border) on top of the white isn't a good idea. Is there a way round this? i've thought of masking around the edge of the applied mask/decal, but it would be too complex i did think about back the white with silver, then white, then applying the black but not sure if this can be done either? the required black will only be approx 2mm thick and be the border of a tribal type design covering an area of approx 1 inch by 3 inches cheers |

i appreciate thats the general rule of thumb, but the paint scheme i'd like (with the paint masks/decals) won't allow me to do this on the lower half of my shell.
Top half is fine as the bulk of it is black, but the bottom half i'd like white, then within the white i'd like the mask/decal to have a black border, i guess i may be able to apply more masking tape so it overlaps the applied decal, then trim the excess so what would be the white area is masked, peel off the border to the decal/mask, paint the black bit, un-mask what was added and do the white? |

so do all your masking pull of the balck at the top and the black pin stripes paint then remove the masking on the white and paint white,

cheers, so pretty much as said above? i'd need to over mask on the bottom, do the black then take it back and do the white? out of interest, if i were to say have a silver border on the bottom and not black, could i go straight onto the white with this and "back" the rest of the white at the same time?? |

I agree with bigred, just mask up everything but the black and spray the black parts in one then unmask the rest as you go.
You can spray the silver on top of the white fine (make sure you have a good coating of white so you can't see through it. If you really cant do it that way then you could back the white with silver and then re-apply the black on the bottom half where necessary. You are causing more problems and higher risk of getting it wrong this way though. If you choose to do it this way you need to make sure you can't see through the white backed with silver at all otherwise the black may show through. Good luck. And do option 1 as bigred says if possible. |
