Hi everyone,

My name is Daniel and I am new to RC car racing. I've joined this forum as this club is local to me as I'm in Rochdale.

As for a little about me, I work as a design engineer for a sprinkler company but I am also a pipefitter and electrical engineer by trade.

I'm one of those people who loves to tinker with anything mechanical and I am a hobbyist mechanic. I've recently started to get back into the things I used to do when I was younger and I am rekindling my passion for RC cars.

I'm looking to get a 1/10th nitro buggy at some point so I can come to the club and race. I do have an old electric 1/10th buggy which I havent used in years and 2 1/16th electric subaru's.

We don't allow nitros I'm afraid. Noise regulations or some such thing.

But you are welcome to run the old electrics. We have quite a few people running a selection of old buggys in with the modern stuff, so bring what you have and see what we do.

Though I should point out as its winter we are racing indoors in Oldham until the weather improves.

I thought nitro was allowed as it says so on the website!

It does say that, and we did allow it in theory but nobody ever used them. But now the track has moved (only a 100 yards or so), we've got some land use conflicts going on with other clubs at Goshen park etc so we have to be extra good little boys and not make a lot of noise.

I think we need to amend the website.

I.C. are allowed but we try to dissuade them as they are usually too slow against modern brushless motors and Lipo batteries. Also the races we run are governed by an instant start and there aren't many who can start an engine first time every time. Another thing, when they crash and the engine cuts out, what do you do then ?
All in all you'll have more fun with your old electric. One Lipo battery to use all day, not like the old days when you had to have a battery for every race. You'll need a "Lipo" charger to go with it, and top up the battery each time.
Old speedos are ok as long as you don't run the battery flat.The new ones have a cut off for Lips.
Brushed motors are fine too. We've seen old 10 turn motors keep up with brushless at most tracks.

I'm in a similar position, I only joined the forum yesterday and it would seem bury is my nearest off road track. I would love to have a go at racing a proper track!
I dont drive though so not sure how I'd get there yet!
I live in Stockport and used to race at Stockport as a junior in the late 80's early 90's. (small indoor circuit)
Not raced since but have a 2wd losi xxx and a 4wd kyosho zx5 atm.
Both still runing brushed motors.
I need a decent radio and receiver before i can race again though as mine is old and poor quality. I will be looking for a used set here or on ebay.
Anyway thats me for now, I'll keep reading in the meantime and hope to meet a few of you soon!

If you can get to Manchester, get the 135 bus from Piccadilly. takes about 30mins and drops you 2 mins away from the track. I often bus it when i dont have the car

As for a radio - just pick up one of these stupidly cheap Ansmann 2.4ghz systems from JE Spares. They'll do everything you need and cost less than a used high end set.

Thanks for the pointers, not sure about the wheel though! I've always used sticks! ...easy to adapt to or stick with what you know???

I was the same, always sticks. The set from Core Rc was £70 with receiver and is a 10 model memory etc.... similar in spec to the old top range radios. Worked well for me.

I ran sticks for some 20 years, but switched a wheel quickly enough. Not sure either is really 'better' but wheels are a lot cheaper!

The Stockport RC club is still running at Cheadle. Its onroad (although buggies can run) but you can come down and take a look and we can let you know about your radio set etc as its a small welcoming club.

Even in this day and age 27meg old acoms are fine, as long as it works.
