Interesting!
It looks like Tamiya went with counter rotating center shafts! ![]() |

Yes they have! Look at the picture again...

I have to disagree too, they will both go the same way! If they both run off the gear that is the spur side they would go the opposite but they don't .

Nope. Youre both wrong. They will go opposite direction.

If you look closely the front shaft is connected to the gear away from the spur only the rear shaft is connected to the spur side only, with the layshaft spining one way and each front and rear shafts have opposite contact points they can't go opposite ways !
If they wanted them to go opposite why did they bother to put two gears on the layshaft as it would only need one for them to go opposite ways! Have a look @ the pics and imagine each gear tuning it becomes quiet clear! |

The comments above are correct, both front and rear shafts will spin in the same direction as they're driven off different gears. In the picture you can see a small air gap between each one.

Since they (front and rear centre drive shafts) are meshed to different sides of the gears, they will rotate in the same direction..
As the gears originating from the spur gear rotate forward, the gear on the spur side rotates the rear drive shaft from "left to right" (as the gear pushes the the rear gear up on the spur side) and the gear on the other sides pushes the front drive shaft gear down on the further side, also causing it to rotate up on the spur side and thus rotating from "left to right"... Sorry if I explained it badly, I most likely did ![]() |

On a seperate note, did anyone notice the different ratio for front and rear?
In the picture it certainly looks like the front centre shaft gear is bigger than the rear, and the air gap between it and then non-connecting gear seems tighter than the rear. Might just be the pics, anyone else agree? Last edited by Jamie.T; 23-11-2011 at 09:00 AM. Reason: Typo |

Yes, if the Spur Gear spins "clockwise" both the rear and front shafts spin "counterclockwise," but because both shafts go out in opposite direction from eachother the gyroscopic effect of the rotating shafts is counteracted so that the car wont tilt on its axis when its in mid air. They are spinning in opposite direction.

^^^ wrong they spin opposite if spin the spur the aft gear will rotate up at the point of contact, the front gear will have to rotate down..
![]() both gears can't run upwards if they're all connected if the rear is connected spur-side and the front is speedo-side then they will go in the same direction.. that is the only way

the picture shows clearly they spin in the same direction. The rear shaft is turned by the gear nearest the spur and the front shaft is driven by the other gear. The pic shows that clearly. Any more pics of the car

I never noticed the gaps before. Thanks for pointing that out.
I still think that the car would be a better car with counter rotating shafts. |

You are correct, counter rotating shafts would be so good. Firstly because it means the centre gearbox would be stronger with a 4th gear acting as a "pressure gear" to stop the centre shaft gears flexing under power, and of course to stop power on twisting of the car on the ground and especially in the air.

I think it has less effect than the fact the the center shafts are angled and slightly offset.
Or maybe it even has a positive effect because of that... |

Yeah I noticed the offset...the more I look at it this car is just pure Tamiya madness top to bottom!
Anyone else think it will be the loudest ever electric car too? If those gears are metal like they look to me...metal in metal in a metal box with no oil as its not a diff....I think it may be louder than an 801....with the engine revving!!
