Hi after looking through this electrics forum i found one section where people reccomend the portasol gas irons.
Is this still the case? will be used for my 1/10 electrics and 1/8 buggy. Also one with a hot air blower attachement would be usefull for heat shrink. Any reccomendations? Thank you |

I use the solderpro 70 from Maplin.
It's on offer at the moment: http://www.maplin.co.uk/solderpro-70...iron-kit-34959 The standard tip you get with it is pretty useless, I would recommend getting the pack which contains the chisel tip. On another note, it does come with a heat gun attachment but have found this is far too hot to do heatshrink, a lighter normally works well for me. |

Portasol is still the best in my opinion, it gets hotter than any other gas iron I've ever seen and makes soldering so easy.

+1 on Portasol, mine is branded up as Snap On but is exactly the same. Use it all the time at work on engine looms etc and have never owned a better or more diverse iron!!

i have the portasol one also,
gotta say though that the tips are not as good as they used to be, the tips you could buy years ago lasted a very long time and were solid, the new tips that they have produced for the last few years are hollow and wear out so quick its unbelievable, they should be a lot cheaper but they are not, they are made cheaper and cost more, cant fault the iron, just the tips, ive even had a couple of tips just fall apart into 2 bits and burnt myself both times it happened as once the tip landed on my lap and burnt the top of my leg and the other one that fell apart landed in my hand and burnt my palm

Got my iroda solderpro 70 off ebay for 20 quid and it's great, just the job - I do use the blowtorch bit for heatshrink too, just keep your distance...But, as stated above you will need the chisel tip which you have to buy in a pack of 4 (maybe 5?) different bits which I could only find from Maplin for 15 quid so a bit of a rip-off in that respect...still a good iron though

Which portasol would you reccomend. Would be looking to use it outside of rc. On my motorbike and on wiring jobs on my boat. Been looking at the portsol super pro 125. The flexibility of no cable is appealing to me. Never realy looked into the gas irons before.
