I am looking at buying a 2nd hand 2wd or 4wd buggy for racing. What tends to do well these days OR what is a good starting point for someone looking at getting back into racing buggies? Thanks.

Well the simplest option has to be the Associated RC10B4.1 Brushless RTR. We've got a lot of new members, and this is the most common car they run, for a very good reason.
Its pretty cheap at just over £200 (thats ready to go except for the battery and charger ie includes a 2.4ghz radio, decent servo and a brushless system), is pretty much the same car as the wildly successful B4 Factory Team, and its race ready from the box. The supplied electrics are more than good enough for club racing. In fact, to race with us pretty much all you'll need is the B4.1, a single Lipo pack of around 5000mAh, a suitable charger and some Schumacher minispikes as the kit tyres are meant for dirt.

Ok, its a really common question and you are in the correct place for loads of good advice from racers
![]() These are my own very very humble opinions: 2wd - you can't go far wrong with a good nick Associated B4/B4.1 really. Super easy to work on, loads of spares available, and tonnes of driver support due to the platform being ever populer. Fairly simple base set-ups and importantly a forgiving and visceral car to drive. 4wd- the Associated B44/B44.1 is a solid and reliable buggy and is often quoted as being a dream to drive for new hands in 4wd. Again, spares are fairly easy to obtain and the cars are nice to work on. You can pick up either for a good price here on oOples trader section and watch out for a Factory Team version as you will be pretty much 'race equiped' with all the solid stuff (titanium turnbuckles etc) There really are so many opinions (all very valid) and sooo much choice out there for 1/10 these days. Most of us will give the same advice when you make the jump in buying your first buggys, go with a brand that has proven products, solid spares back up (you will break stuff as you are learning, in fact we all do) and easy to set up and drive. Most of us have owned one or both of these Associated cars or at least one of the modified versions of these platforms over the years. Most experienced buggy owners will agree, buy a common buggy at first, learn how to strip it totally and rebuild every part. Race it and ask as many questions as you can from your fellow racers, most of all have fun ![]()

I notice you say "back into", if you were completely new i'd suggest you steer clear of 4wd until you get some experience, they're more expensive, require more maintenance and the 4wd class tends to have more experienced drivers so you might feel uncompetitive. For 2wd B4.1 is an excellent choice. So it really depends on your experience and budget.
For a cheaper 4wd options though, the Caster SK10 (£150 RTR with brushless power from Bolton Model Mart)is good and i've heard good things about the FTX Vantage (£173 from Rossmod and RTR even including a lipo and basic charger).

Thanks for all the advice! Definitely given me something to think about.
Think i'm going to go with a 2wd for now. I used to race 2wd about 12 years ago when I was a kid, so prob best to stick with what I know (at least for now). Thanks again and if anyone has anymore suggestions, please keep em coming!! |

Put it this way - lots of them for sale at the moment....
Neither have really impressed. The B4 and its mid motored conversions still remains the top choice, but the new Durango looks good.

Dude you need to learn to set your cars up and your electrics up and give them a chance before making judgement on them.

Says the guy who swapped out every piece of his B4.1 RTR before it had done more than a dozen laps!
