Default Thinking of going 2.4Ghz...

Hey guys,

Just wondered if anyone has any experience with 2.4GHz Steerwheel radios. I was looking at either the Spektrum 2 higher offerings, or the Futaba 3PM. I have heard from an expert, that the Futaba has a much better menu system, and that you need to run a capacitor on the spektrum reciever to prevent glitching. My only downer is that on the futaba, spare recievers are £90!!

If anyone could share their experiences...

Thanks
Mark

I run a standard DX3.0 (not spektrums race version) with no capacitor and have had no glitches what so ever, i cant comment for spektrums race system but the menu on mine is quite awkward. Id have a look at both and see what you prefer, all i know for sure is 2.4ghz makes life alot easier

My Spektrum (pro) experience is 100% positive, no downsides that I can think of or detect whilst driving.

I have a Spektrum Pro on a KO Universe, and its been faultless.

With LRP/Nosram ESC's, the BEC supply is rather low and so a capacitor is advised, but with a Novak ESC, the BEC supply is strong and it runs Spektrum very well.

Though the top line spektrum steerwheel radio looks good, I held one at a recent race - didn't use it, just held it. And thought it felt and looked (in the flesh) cheap and flimsy. Not sure of the price of them compared to other stuff - maybe they are really cheap so that needs taking into account.
They probably work well but I just didn't like the feel
I use the M11 with the sanwa 2.4ghz system - quite expensive I guess. Maybe you can shop around the for futaba receivers?

Glad to hear peoples thoughts on their experiences. I wasn't going to get a spektrum module, since I have an old-school radio with no model memory, and was hoping to open up my options, should I wish to run more than one car.

I was going to go for the Futaba, since their equipment seems pretty good and they have been around for a while. The Spektrum stuff does look a little cheaper, plastics wise. Also they seem very cheap for the DX3.0 DSM3 radio with 2 recievers, 2 servos and the transmitter, for just a little more than the Futaba kit only.

I have also heard bad things about the Spektrum menu's being confusing from more than one person.... I have never used Futaba kit before so have no experience of it.

Thanks guys
Mark

I've been using a Sanwa M8 with a Spektrum Module and receiver and it has been completely faultless without an extra capacitor using an LRP Sphere Comp speedo.

The cheapest setup you can get at the moment is if you pick up a decent M8 from ebay.com either with a DSM module included or just get the Sanwa DSSS Module and receiver set which sells for about 80-85 quid here in Germany. Sanwa receivers are tiny and only cost something like 40 pounds. Bargain!!!

I have the Acoms 2.4 ghz. Less than half the price of some of the others but so far I have had no problems with it. 10 model memory and has the 3rd channel on the receiver for telemetry too!

I have just started to use the 3PK super 2.4ghz radio and it's great. I opted for futaba's own 2.4 system, i know they are a little bit more expensive and a bigger receiver but i wanted to keep with the same manufacterer instead of going with spektrum. I did notice that i was turning in to quickly at a corner (must be the responce) I've turned the servo speed down a bit and i'm slowly turning it up till i get used to it.
I was using the K.O helios before the 3PK which was a good radio but the 3PK feels more solid, by the way the helios is up for sale in the for sale thread
