I'm running a XX4 at the moment. Biggest problem you are going to find if you want to be really competitive is with the drive train. Its tight, inefficient and easily broken.

I'm currently trying to put together a kit that replaces the crappy plastic 2mm pitch pulleys and even crappier belts with 2.5mm pitch alloy pulleys and kevlar reinforced neoprene belts.

The best mod that I ever did to the car was running it using a stubby lipo shoved right up aginst the motor, with all of the electrics on the servo side. 50g of brass between the lipo and tunnel got the car balanced just right - much better than the old one saddle forward method. Means that you can get rid of most of the lead in your front belt housing.

Once the pulleys and gears are sorted the car will be competitive again.
