Default Tamiya cans?

Hi,

Is it normal for Tamiya lexan paints to become unstuck after a few weeks?

I painted my shell 4 weeks ago and the paint on the wing started to peel last week and the body is now starting to lift where the body gets hit. You can see the paint lifting under the shell as the paint looks different?

I did strip the wing the other day with nail varninsh remover and rub it down with 1200 wet and dry and repaint, seems OK, for now.

Is it the paint, should I use fasttrax paint? Or is it my prep?

Thanks,

Rob.

did you wash the shell out 1st? the shells usually are sprayed with a release agent so they come off the mould & if you don't wash it off properly (i.e. warm soapy water & lots of it) then nothing will stick to it very well.

Another factor is did you use Tamiya PS paint?

Also the Fastrax paint & the Tamiya paint are pretty much identical (some people even say it's the same stuff).. except the fastrax paint is usually a quid cheaper & you get more in the tin!

Hi,

I washed the shell out with warm soapy water, put a coat of paint on, heat gunned it until it went matt, then did the wing the same. Then all over again until the yellow ran out. Went straight onto the white protective coat and did the same, spray, heat, matt etc etc.

More importantly, which Tamiya spray did you use?

I sprayed our 24hr car with Tamiya PS paints and the paint stuck for the entire meeting. I wash the shell, mist the first few coats leaving about 30 mins between coats and then spray as normal leaving 30 mins between. All left to air dry at room temp.

It was PS-27 yellow and PS-1 white. I had no problems with it untill the the 3-4 week mark when the wing paint lifted, now the body is lifting also on the impact points.

I'll get another shell and use the air gun pot paints for lexan

Ive had TC and buggy shells that have done years without the paint peeling, even my two year old Tamiya buggy wing is still fine. Might be worth letting the paint dry naturally rather than heating it up As far as I know the paint eats into the lexan, if it dries too quickly it might not have time to react properly. I could be wrong tho

funny you say this. i have painted with loads of tamiya cans in the past, but the most recent tin of white nomatter if sprayed in mist coats or decent covering ones, it goes exactly like there is silicon in it and then flakes off once dry. Gutted as i've used it on two shells now.

I think I'll try the paint pot airbrush type paints for the next shell.

Hi,

only had this happen when putting the paint on either too thick/fast. Lots of light dusty coats is the trick.

You've also got to really scrub the shells with a few drops of washing liquid and dry them thoroughly before painting.

cheers

Ju

If you shooting one colour then you can scuff up the body lightly then wash it out this will give the paint a key to stick to.

From my experience it seems like you have just put the coats on a little thick, it happens

The heat from a hair dryer is enough to dry between coats and doesn't effect the paint sticking. Also I never use to bother washing the body with single colours (never had any problems) tho it does make good practice to do it!

Also Fastrax and tamiya aren't the same and I personally feel the tamiya stuff tho a little more costly is much better.

You could have a bad batch ? I'd contact Tamiya UK and say it's messed up some of your shells ? give them the batch code, see what's going on !
