Default Mid Motor 2wd's...

Question,

2wd flat chassis cars have been around for 30+ years, why only now, in 2011 are they coming on the market?.

Lack of model engineers tweeking in garages?

Mid motor was tried in the 90's and failed, so nobody followed.

Then Xfactory made the X-6 approx 2006, and due to their continuous development and analysing discovered the kick of the motor was working against the weight transfer on acceleration. So by turning the motor (4 gear gearbox) it kicked correctly and hey-presto an excellent mid-motor 2wd.

So the motor kick was the discovery, and other brands followed.

I ran a mid motor converted Cougar 2000... must have been '95/'96... was very hard to drive on anything other than flat carpet on foam tyres (?!)

Ran it on tarmac on foams and it was good too... thats when buggys were run at the same meetings as the wide scale tourers (buggys with bodyshells!)

was useless on grass though!

Maybe its down to the grip levels on tracks we run on now?

Cars are certainly better engineered these days and materials are far superior, used to spend time between heats replacing popped o ring shock seals.

Difference between clubs mainly running astro or carpet, as opposed to Grass/Dirt?

tbh carpet was a luxury too... most of the clubs i ran inddors at were shiny wooden floors!

it was mainly grass tracks at the beginning of the season... turning to dirt by the end!

Another factor was the weight of equipment and certainly of Nicad cell packs, we now choose to weight cars and where the weight is placed.

The r/c buggy market is largest in America and mainly manufacturers based there... Losi has mentioned with marketing for the 22 release that rear motor cars are more suited to loose dirt tracks and mid motor config for higher grip surfaces.
