Hi guys,
Am wanting to use an instant gasket type product to seal the backplate on an old OS21 RF-B (& maybe the carb body to crankcase joint too). The product i've bought states it's a silicone sealant but not suitable for fuel systems. I know that silicone is degraded by petrol but wondered if the methanol/nitro fuels we use also attack silicone? Does anyone have any recommendations of a suitable sealant - I do have some blue hylomar, would this work? Many thanks in advance |

Red/Orange Hermatite (I think that's the brand) name is great for gaskets.

never had the need to do it myself, once the back plate is on you will struggle to remove it, just get a new oring seal

Thanks for the replies,
it's such an old engine that there's no provision for an o ring seal in the backplate and it just relies on a thin paper gasket which has pretty much disintegrated, so i thought i'd give the sealant a go. I'll have a look for the orange Hermatite stuff and give it a try Cheers |

VW use sealant on the later cars sumps. It is about £16 a tube but is defo ok with fuel and oil. Give that a try. You could also try tiger seal from a automotive paint supplier, I've used that on sumps and gearbox's in the past and it is fine. Good lukc.
