Default Nissan Note, metal bit on steering column

Anyone have any idea what it is, the bronze part?
It has just started chafing on the carpet and making pinging noises, im guessing my dad kicked it with his foot and bent it?

Thanks

Ian

Looks like some sort of locking tab to stop that bolt coming loose. Its a pretty crucial bolt, you wouldn't want it coming loose.
