Post DNX408 Servo Issue

A few guys are having issues with servos. Durango has posted this up to help any issues.

Vibrations - this can kill servos so use the rubber grommets that come with your servos. It best if your servo stands off the radio tray and chassis, (small gap) but some servos are wider than others so if yours going to touch then its best if you put something soft between the servo and the radio-tray/chassis. Double tape accross whole side of the servo with the backing left on works perfect because it stops vibrations and the backing paper is a great thermal insulator (see below). Fabric, felt or some card also works well. Don't use aluminium foil tape or anything metallic that will transmit heat through to the servo.

Heat - is another killer of servos. With the super high power 7.4volt servos used now the servo its self can generate a lot of heat especially on the throttle servo if you don't have your end points set properly. Make sure you are not overloading the servo, because if its stalling almost all the time (on full throttle and full brakes) because you have not set your end points then its gonna pull loads of current and will over heat very fast.
Heat soak - the biggest possible problem is with alloy cased servos directly against the radio-tray/chassis, but if you use the double tape, fabric, felt or card to cut out vibrations as noted above then that problem is gone. As our servo is lying down we don't get much radiated heat from the engine as its down by the engine mount away from the combustion chamber. But if you are running in super hot conditions then its worth putting heat reflective tape across the back of the servo and being careful how long you leave the car running on the starter box without any airflow. BTW - Heat shield tape normally has glass fibre backing, don't use regular aluminium tape as that is designed simply not to melt in high temp applications and actually helps conduct heat into what its taped to - eeek!

As part of ongoing development - We are working on sexy anti vibration pads to go under servos that are a bit prettier than servo tape or Ikea felt pads Plus also some TD approved heat sheild, we are trying for gold for extra bling and to match the rest of the car.
