Default Shark Gearing

I think my last couple of brushless motors / speedos have all died on me due to overgearing, but I don't know what the right gearing is. Is there a ratio calculator for the shark or some other way of figuring it out. I went through 3 different 10.5 motors in my touring car, and I don't want to repeat that with my micro.

Depends on the motor kv,if you run too large a pinion for the given motor it will overheat, thats what kills them, ask other people who use the same motor, what they use,
I run a 10.5 mongoose motor(7300kv)on a 10 pinion with stock 45 spur with a fan and it runs warm, could go to a 11 pinion, but any bigger it would probably overheat

Will have a look at my new motor and see what power it is, but gonna put an SPX in it, and use my Nxxt40 in an on-road micro that's smaller and needs the smaller electrics. Dunno if that'll be the Xray TC or a Carisma F1 yet.

I think the recommend combo is 10/49 with a 10.5T mongoose, thats what i ran in mine and it was fine.

Default motors

What motors is everyone running, as my last remaining brushless is a Nosram, but it's a 2.3mm shaft, and I'm having trouble locating the right size pinions for it. I feel that I should only run items I can stock, so that might limit my choices, but if I can't do that, then I will.

Default pinions

I'm trying to source some pinions, even get some made. I need to know the range of pinions that people are running, as if I get some made up, it's probably best to order a lot to keep costs down. I imagine the more popular being in the range of 9 to 12, but have asked about sizes up 16 so, I also need to know what motor shaft sizes are people running too if not 2mm or 2.3mm (there's more established sources for 2mm shafts though).

Don't want to say too much about who I've asked yet, but they do have a good reputation, so shouldn't disapoint.

RW already make all of those.
0.6 mod for the FTX/Shark for 2.0mm, 2.3mm and standard (3.14mm) shafts
Generally starting at 9t up to at least 16t
If you can'tfind someone who stocks them just ask Neil at RW and I'm sure he'll let you know who'll have them.

Oh, cool, seeing as they're who I asked. I'll get stocked up on them in the new year.

Default gear ratios

Anyone know of the gear ratios for the shark / blaze. Having trouble finding the right size pinions, but if I want to use the motor setting plates, the smallest pinion is an 11, unless someone knows something I don't, which is likely.

I usually use this site to work out the gearing for my on road cars, and I can use it for the shark as long as I have more details than I have now.

Most people dont use the setting plate, use a small washer instead

I used to do something similar, but it was a bugger trying to get the thing meshed.

Default gearing

i dont use a setting plate or a washer on all 4 of my sharks and never had any problems with meshing or motor coming loose

on my novak mongoose 8.5 i have 12/49 and same on the rest, except one i have 9/49

a good tip is to get a backi paper fold it in half and place between pinion and spur, push pinion and spur together as much as you can, tighten and spin wheels to release paper,

and no i have never used the paper trick either, just a tip i heard at trackside,..

i also have a brain, lol... re: below

Yeah has to be said I've never used a washer, setting plate, or a piece of paper to set gear mesh, I just have a brain and can use it.

With the motor mount removed I tighten the bottom screw so it's pretty much completely tight, but allows me to move the motor ever so slightly, then screw the motor mount into the car, get the mesh right, and tighten the top screw.

Got an email back from Neil this morning. I think I'll leave ordering any till the new year 'cos of the xmas post, but thinking of ordering at least 1 of each from 9 to 16, and then getting more of the more popular ones for the shop, so do most agree that that would be the lower numbered pinions 9-12 or just 9 & 10? 2mm and 2.3mm are both available.
