Default Some noob help please

Not raced 10th off road for at least 15 years now and have just bought a sh Lazer ZX5 (waiting for it to arrive).

Now I've read through 18 pages of this section to read up on the Lazers and notice that there are 2 or 3 (maybe 4) different versions.

No idea what the one I have bought but the seller said it's the same type as the one Jimmy reviewed on this forum http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/zx5/

Where does this fall within the range please?

Thanks in advance

Lee

Thats the original ZX-5 Jimmy reviewed a few years ago.

its a great car but the FS and FS2 are a step up.

It would help if you gave us some more info like where are you racing and what electrics are you installing?

Thanks for the reply Neil......

TBH the car is a stepping stone to see if I can manage/get back into 10th off road

Electric wise I'll be putting a Tekin RS speedo, LRP X11 (or Nosram)10.5 motor and Vampire 2700 lipo as these are what I already own.

Going to see about getting into R2 of Ardent off road series to give it a run.

How does the original ZX5 compare to the FS & FS2? is it still competition worthy?

Any parts I should keep a eye on?

The car will have a FULL strip down and rebuilt checking for any worn parts and replaced if needed

**EDIT**
Any gearing help would also be good (on the above motor) please

The Lazer ZX5 is a great car for you to use while you work your way back in.
Having run the ZX5 when it was first released it was an ok car, this was around 4 years ago i think.

Now i have recently started running the Kyosho FS2 and i have to say it is awesome.. and best thing is i havent had to spend, dremmell or add anything to make it go...

Hope you enjoy racing and take it up full time again... more racers the better.

I would say the only weakness was the front shock tower, you should still be able to get some non-kyosho carbon ones that was quite thick and very strong.
as for gearing im not sure on those motors. just start with something small like 18 tooth pinion and see how it goes. keep checking the temp of the motor and esc regular. If its cool after 2 or 3 minutes and car is of the pace you should be able to gear up.

Cheers (again) Neil, Are part still obtainable for this model? also can you remember who made the carbon shock towers?

What sort of temps should I be looking at for the motor?
Cheers

hey lee!

your car should be with you tomorrow!

I always went to ry @ jespares for lazer bits, the only thing i broke on the car was the front shock tower support, and i'ts pretty common to upgrade this to an alu version.

carbon towers are always nice, but the impact that broke the support left the tower undamaged, so the plastci flexes nicely.

included a 17t and 19t pinion for ya, i've been running the 19t indoors at caldicot and i't been great, but you'll prob need a bigger motor or pinion for larger tracks.

(oh, a few of the screws are now hex head, which should help with the rebuild!)

hope you enjoy it as much as i did mate.

That's the fella. You need 2 of them, front & rear.
Then you 'may' need spare towers as with the alu support it will be the towers that crack instead - but you do have to give them a right good shunt to break anything
