Hi,
I bought the TRF501X years ago, it's from the first series but it has been in hybernation all these years. Now I want to resurrect the hobby but I need a motor+ESC. I have thought in: LRPx12+SXX, Novak KinetikBallistic and Hobbywing Xerun 2000Kv 150A. The turns vary from 6.5 to 8.5T. I am planning to use it to compete in a not too distant future. Could you, gentlemen, help me a bit? Thank you from Spain |

Stay away from the X12 motors...almost all of the examples I've used have run hot or detroyed the bearings.
Last season I ran a LRP TC-Spec speedo with an LRP X11 5,5T motor with a bonded rotor to give better feel. This gave me 2nd in the national champ in 4WD, but for next year I'm strongly considering switching to Speed Passion 2.0 speedos and the V3 5,5T motors. My teammate has run this setup in his touring car and it works perfectly. Plenty of feel and not too much drag brake; another reason why I dislike X12 motors. Novak I have no experience with, other than earlier models which also ran hot, and neither do I have experience with Hobbywing speedos. Do not mix the SXX Version 2 with a speed passion motor. There's a significant amount of cogging of the line. |

I can only advice not to use X12 motors too! I had 3 of them so far and will never buy one again. Had problems with heat (gear ratio was right always) and had 2 motors with strange noises that turned out these where manufacturing problems.
I am still in the procedure of testing motors but i heard Novak Ballistic are good motors. I currently have a Robitronic which costs only half of the X12 and i recently bought a Castle Creations Mamba Max Pro system which i wil be testing next year but i am pretty confident that they are at least as good as the LRP motor for half the money. |

everybody has different thoughts on motors and speedo's, I personally really like x12 motors, gear ratios and the amount of timing you apply can be different to other motors as x12's have a ton of timing built into them already hence why they get hot, for best results use the -10 4 dot timing plate and gear currently and it won’t disappoint!

Get the speed passion stuff mate, the blue gt pro goes beautifully with the tamiya alloy!!
![]() They are really smooth feeling v3 motors and i think a 6.5 is ample for any level of driver. ![]()

The X12's run hot but that's not the issue. The issue is the bearings exploding.
I've run an X12 6.5 in my DB-01 for months with a normal operating temp of 90°C and even went over 100°C a few times and still lives. The Tamiya badged X12 6.5 i got in my 511 never went over 80°C but the bearing exploded at the end of a straight during my 2nd or 3rd practice lap on a nationals day which cracked the rotor and damaged the insides. As for the speedo i'm currently using a XeRun 120A and I love it. I don't know if the new SXX V2 is any better then the old SXX but the XeRun (and thus the speedpassion) gives a much preciser throttle control then the old SXX.

Thank you guys!
I think I will go for the speed passion 2.0 and V3 motor...6.5T is ok? What do you think of the mamba max? |

The Mamba Max Pro is sensored, but I don't know anyone that uses them for racing.

I will maybe get the chance to test my Mamba Max Pro before the Winter comes and will post my impressions here. A friend has an old Mamba Max which i could watch the whole season. Yes it is unsersored but i didn´t notice a big difference to sensored motors and escs.
