How do you play Mario Kart Wii?

I've been playing online a bit recently and I see loads of people are playing with the wheel. Personally I could never get on with the wheel so have been playing with the nun-chucks ever since.

I was going alright last night putting in some good 3rd's, but still seem to get grouped with people on 6500 rating when I'm on 5100 and they finish half a lap ahead of me :S
