What upgrades are recommended and I have heard ball cups are an issue. What are people using?

Mikey to be honest the ball cups are ok, you may pop one in a big shunt but so far my ones have been ok.

People to use HB, or AE TC5 ball joints and Rpm or Losi cups with good success. I have heard Kyosho ball cups fit the STD ball joints so that's an option?

All the car really needs are the front Ali hinge pin holders and roll bars if you like them?
