ultimate for flexibility (to remove the idler gear to reverse the motor rotation)
or ultimate for reliability (less maintenance having full enclosed gears)....?

The X 6 box works well and is reliable, steer away from the Cougar one

I would say you could not improve the X6 box, maybe have the option of Gear or Ball diff, or even a little torsen diff?! Now that would be cool!

For AE based cars the X-6 tranny hands down, for losi based cars the PSI Racing 4 gear tranns which comes in 2 versions for either a ball diff or the Losi gear diff out of the desert truck and soon Losi's SCT.

Nothing wrong with the external idler gear route and with a little thought it can be made fully enclosed so no issue there.

If it's cost-no-option then an internal 4 gear is obviously preferable. If you factor in cost then the external idler wins hands down.

Pays your money, makes your choice

Sorry i was meaning the way they rotate and throw there inertia the ac/idler type keeps the wheels/spur/motor all rotating in the same direction and the x6 keeps the wheels/motor the same but the spur rotates backwards....hope this makes sense
cost is no issue
i also like like the centred motor posistion of the cougar but nothing else
cheers

I see what you mean but I can't imagine the rotating mass of the spur/slipper will have much, if any effect on the car. However if you add the X6's slipper weight then there's even more options .

It certainly can have an effect. After the motors rotor, and the diff the spur gear / layshaft gear is the next heaviest assembly.

Some people will tell you that one is better than the other but those in the know will all tell you that yes, there is a difference in drive characteristics.

For me contra-rotating is the way to go however you go about it, but I don't think motor position has been optimized yet .... true mid engined is the way to go I reckon
