If she speaks to her phone provider, they will set up the account so the iphone can be used as a dongle. They will talk her through the settings, then you just connect the phone via the cable and away you go.

most telco's don't like tethering and will charge you an arm and a leg for the data. Be very surprised if they agree to it and allow it from the dataplan she already pays for

iPhone tethering is an option. Not sure what Orange charge for it, but O2 charge 7.50 per month.

There are apps that can be downloaded to a jailbroken iPhone - PDANET springs to mind. Setting up an adhoc network allows the laptop to connect thru PDANET to utilise the mobile data network, giving you internet access on the laptop.

However all new contracts (this has been implemented in the last few months) are subject to maximum data usage limits - anything around 500MB per month, which might be limiting for constant, every night TV watching. I think the data caps don't apply to existing contracts which were originally uncapped. Don't upgrade if you don't have to!

PS. There's a rumour that 3 is allowing free tethering with their iPhone package. Worth investigating, if you're not already tied to a contract, although it still has the data cap.
