How to get your whites white?

I have white wheels and i think these look better than yellow ones but my white whee are for ever getting dirty and they have marks on them and i can never get the dirt from the very inside of the wheel. And as my b4 is all nice and shiny now i have got load sof new bits i want shiny wheels to match so how can i ge tmy whites white again.

Try to boil them in water. It remove most of the dirt...

I use acetone. First soak to remove old tyres, second soak to clean wheels, after acetone put them straight into hot soapy water and give em a scrub. This works a treat.

Put some break cleaner/motor spray on a cloth and scrub hard. Makes them new

Honestly!

I acetone my wheels + tyres after cutting the insert out of them, leave to soak 24hrs or longer (usually 2-3 months til I need to do a load more LOL), then take out of acetone, remove rubber, scrub with a cloth and they are cleaner - but slightly yellow.

Next, boil the kettle and fill up the sink - usually two full kettle full does it for me. Chuck in some Daz, or whatever else (Surf, Percil, Bold etc) and then chuck the wheels in. Leave to soak til the water cools to tepid, and then scrub each wheel up with an old toothbush (or someone elses). once all wheels done, drain the sink, then rinse each wheel under running tap and then dry.

Hey presto, wheels look like new, even the scratched ones. Woody was the one who showed me this tip.

I also know of someone (F1) who uses the dishwasher... and I don't mean his mrs'.

That would be a devorceable offence in my house.....LOL!

Tooth paste for me warm water toothpaste, and old toothbrush. Works a treat !

Dishwasher works a treat, all the wheels used from the weekend stick em in 50deg cycle, make sure the Mrs is out and hey presto job done, get them out and make sure that any dirt residue is flushed down the drain. shiney and nice wheels.

Chris, where can you buy the acetone needed to remove the tyres and what type do you get?

I am lucky to have a friend in the chemicals trade, who can sometimes get pure acetone for me in gallon tins. Unfortunately I can't get any more than I need - as it may be 12-18 months before i get anymore, and then its time to be ditching the old stuff.

I know Carl Latham was selling a similar alternative which worked well, I am sure he'll read this and respond soon.

other than that, try a hairdressers, or a 'cash and carry for hairdressers' if they exist.

Oh well, thanks chris. I didnt think you could buy the 100% stuff really as its probably not very nice. I was just wondering coz i get new tires and just buy new rims which cost a tenner and acetoning even 1 set would save me money.

p.s. Sigma-Aldrich are one of the giant lab chemicals suppliers. Some of the smaller distributors will probably do cash/cc sales if you want to get acetone in bulk:

You might need to give them a ring and convince them that you're not going to do anything terrible with it first

Where else could you learn things like "5800 mg/Kg oral-rat LD50" which means that 5.8g of acteone kills on average half of rats weighing 1kg. You'll thank me when that comes up on the next pub quiz

You can buy acetone at most automotive paint supply shops. It cost me about £10 for 5 litres.

*cough* Muc-Off is a lovely pink liquid, which is surprisingly tame (compared to acetone and propan-2-ol and Cillit Bang and Flash etc). It's used by mountain bikers and moto-x ers to clean their bikes.

It's good stuff.
