Default AVG freezing my laptop

Every day for the last four days whenever Avg starts to scan within 2 minutes my laptop completley freezes up. Prior to this it was working fine with avg for last 6 months. I cant use ctrl alt delete to stop the task it just locks solid. Only thing I can do is push and hold start to restart it.
Does anyone else have this problem and can it be sorted.

Sounds like malware. Try running malware bytes, that should clear it off.

I agree, sounds like malware.

Try booting up in safe mode and runing the scan again. (keep tapping F8 when you turn the laptop on)

You could also try an online scan like the f-secure one.

Still the same problems. Tried the f-secure and it found 9 problems and cleaned them. I then tried to scan again but with the same results, about 10 mins in it freezes all the keys and I have to turn the laptop of manually. Dont know whats on it but it does not allow any scans to finish.
Also I have tried to system restore it but it wont allow anydate earlier than when the trouble started so thats no use. Im not too sure about using paypal at the moment incase my details are not safe.

wonder if its heat related and the scan is tipping it over the edge and freezing it?
either that or a hard drive failure?

Yes tried that and again this morning the f-secure said it had cleaned up 9 problem but when I ran the malwarebytes again it revealed 14 rogue malwares and removed them I then tried to scan complete comp but it froze again.
Re the heat issue the laptop on a hard surface with good ventilation and running cool to mildly warm.

I've had good results using the Microsoft online scanner

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

It's found things that even Malwarebytes has missed....

Could be a check disk issue. Goto my computer > right click the c drive and goto tools, click perform scan disk and see if that helps.

Finally after many scans with various sites some saying 9 faults some saying 644 faults pay £xxx and we will fix it, the fault seems to be in the regiistry which after a clean up everything is back in working order. Also very fast now.
Thanks or the advice given would have been lost without it.

Was going to suggest..backup your data, and reformat, and re-install windows. Its best to do this every 12-24 months anyway on a Windows box, because of the dreaded bit-rot

CCleaner should help you in future mate, run that every now and again and it will help fix the registry too.
