Default RB5 SP2 - What a great build !

I've just built the RB5 SP2 that will be used for the review of my Mid Custom Special and I must say I'm impressed at the quality, and so were the others!

Let me set you the scene : covered pits of the 3rd round of the french nationals and I'm bored between rounds (15 heats !) so I decide to build the brand new SP2 that's in my boot...

The guy next to my neighbour buys a Cougar and starts building it a couple of hours after i've started, so we've been able to compare the build all along.

The build was a breeze ! The fits are excellent, and there's neither any binding nor ANY play in the front end at all, it's JUST RIGHT, and the rear suspension has just a little of forward/backwards play in the wishbones, but nothing bad and it's the same l/r so no problems here.

Diff is silky smooth, steering as well, gearbox has a very slightly tight spot but it still spins freely, so it'll have disappeared after 2 laps, and the suspension is free all round without fiddling. Shoks are silky smooth etc...

In comparison the cougar has a binding in the drivetrain, the gearbox halves don't interlock and leave a gap where you can see the gears, the suspension isn't free, you needed and 1/8th servo to turn the steering, and it took him a lot more time than it took me...

People in the pits kept on picking both cars during the builds, and were really impressed with the SP2 on quality grounds...

I'll try to get a mini review up on oOple soon but to sum it up, this probably is the kit of the HIGHEST QUALITY I've ever seen and built - period.

Just curious, but do the rear have the 2mm washer between hex and hub as is shown on the kyosho website?

Just built my first Kyosho from parts (ZX-5 FS conversion)
And i have to admit it's very high quality and a joy to build.
Im a novice builder and after two evenings everything was perfect.
No suspicious sounds or binding, everything was smooth as silk.
It's like building a X-ray.

Odd that he had trouble with the Cougar steering, I thought it was well designed and I couldn't get it to bind no matter how hard I cranked down the screws.

You're right about the gearbox though, can't recall the last kit I built where the box halves didn't 'key' into each other, with the screws simply used to hold it all together rather than for alignment too.

Looking forward to seeing the Ultima mid anyway!

Mr Pink,

They're the same as the SP, basically it's an SP with the UM517 kit (I mean literally, the instructions are that of the SP and you get the UM517 upgrade sheet, and a bag labeled UM517...).

P_B

Even my gearbox is keyed... apparently one of the knuckles was tight, but I mean this was really really tight, there's no way I'd have built the car like that.

They have just arrived into stock last week.

Ask your local shop for prices.

After owning and building most brands made since 1983, I built my first contemporary Kyosho car recently (RB5 SP) and I have to agree, the fit, finish and quality control on this car is light years beyond that of Associated and Losi. I was pleasantly surprised with the build quality of the car and all of the pieces—machined aluminum, molded composite or plastic, and the overall fit of everything assembled.

I have 2 Associated conversions here on the shelf in the workshop, and the Kyosho is by far a nicer car than either of them.

I'll definitely own more Kyosho products in the future.

Nice to get a fan after all that time

its not just the quality of the build its the time and years of experience that go into desining a car that actually works. even out the box the car is competitive no need for any options.

And on top of all that, is if that wasn't enough, they are easily the strongest and hardest wearing of all the current cars ... and the shocks, OMG are those shocks good
