It's a combination of things I think to be honest. The smoking ban hit a lot of pubs hard, the recession hasn't helped, supermarket prices are another, but our social habbits are changing completely too.

I've worked in pubs in the past, and whereas you get some really nice pubs, you get some right dives too, but it seems like it's hitting every kind of pub right now.

I think the only pubs that will survive it, are the ones who have enough regulars, or are quick enough to change things that might be going wrong.

i reckon once you've bought your house, or paid to fill your car up, or even done your weekly shop, you can't afford to go to the pub anymore!
thats without all your other bills!

the price of beer is almost as much of a pisstake as the price of fuel nowadays

knowing a couple of landlords, if you can't afford your pub, the wages from the brewery or owner isn't brill and the hours long. The only way to be profitable is to own your pub and do as much as possible in it.

Also, 20 years ago, you could get drink from an Off-Licence or a pub, now you can buy a flagon of cider from the likes of Tesco cheaper than pop...

Know what you mean about the piss take on prices. I don't tend to drink in my local's, as quote frankly, they tend to be full of idiots, so I'll go drinking up the road in Stoke, but that means either using public transport and coming home early, or driving, so being on Pepsi all night, so you think paying the price you do for alcohol is bad, wait till you've paid over a pound for a 330ml can, or £3 in Birmingham for a 500ml bottle!

Mind you, the prices in Weatherspoons is relatively cheap, but unless you go with a bunch of friends, there's no atmosphere. I'd rather pay a little bit extra, and have a landlord make that extra effort in ensuring I and other enjoy ourselves, after all, that's what a pub is there for.

simples - population keeps increasing, and people need somewhere to live.
drinkers can always drink at home, but people can't live in pubs (though some of you may wish you could)
