Default Virgin Racing = Team Shambles!

They have built their car with a fuel tank which can't hold enough juice to get them to the end of the race!

They are having to make new chassis to accomidate the tank which then have to be passed by the FIA with crash tests and stuff. I bet some one might be getting a very stern tel ling off!

Heard that on Radio 1 lol.

Apparently Jake Humphries is gonna try and find out how that cock up happened

Just hope it isnt as boring as Bahrain. Jake said on the Moyles show that Eddie Jordan fell asleep about 20 minutes in lol

I read that this morning too. They would be 13 litres short of a full race load on some tracks. How can someone design a highly thought out thing like an F1 car with all the aerodynamics, loadings etc and not work out the mpg.
Isnt it a rule now that they must also have 1 litre left in the tank after finishing for fuel tests.

Yeah they need 1L left in the tank, but you could just rig up a cut-off so the engine would shut down when there is 1L left in the tank

Yeah, let's have a car on the final leg going down straight approaching 200mph and then shut it's engine off.

You mean, like when a car runs out of fuel?

There is also a lot of talk that RedBull is suffering the same problems, too, and it is speculated that it is why Seb slowed so drastically in Bahrain (and not a fouled spark plug, as they claim).

Love listening to Murray Walker on those old F1 broadcasts. Thanks for those vids.

oddly enough there's an identical rule in karting. it's to do with contingency - in karting we often have to run several formation laps if a runner is out of position on the grid (rolling starts!).

the dude responsible for this VR mess has probably already been sacked. that mistake is going to cost silly money to fix.

Nick Wirth explained it in qually this morning:

- monocoque had to be signed off design-wise in June
- Cosworth supplied facts and figures for fuel consumption at the time, so car designed with small margin of error in MPG/tank capacity.
- fuel density regs changed at Brazil 09, moving the goalposts
- most other teams have bigger margin of error so are unaffected
- Wirth believes that ''at least one other team has the same problem but its not come out yet''.

They are going to redesign the car and introduce a VR01 Spec B at Barcelona, with bigger tank and other step ups in performance.

Well maybe not so harsh as to just cut out, but have a system which throws it into a 'limp mode' to enable the driver to safely park the car up with brakes and steering still acting in their normal way

What must it have been like at the fuel tank supplier...?

"Fred, here's the Virgin Racing tank drawings, get 'em a quote."

Some time later...

"Fred, why are we giving VR a discount?"
"No discount, boss, that's the price for a 170 litre tank."
"170 litres? They couldn't have... they haven't... they have!!"

Scene ends with sounds of laughter and people rolling on the floor...

Well, what would you have done? (*snigger*)
