cheap brushless combo.....advice please!

Hi guys!!

my lovely wife has just brought me an associated B44 kit...so am just after some advice with regards a cheap(ish) brushless combo to go in it!!

ideally would wanna spend no more than £125, as it doesn't need to be race spec!

I was looking at one of these:

oh, and i'm not running lipo yet...but plan to switch pretty soon.

One of the issues you will have with this combo is that it is sensorless rather than sensored - therefore prone to glitching (stuttering) particularly on acceleration.

It depends if you just want this for bashing - in which case I guess OK. If you want to race at your local club you'll find that the 10.5T is somewhat underpowered for the B44. Most run 5.5T or 6.5T on reasonable size tracks.

Have a look at the Losi Xcelorin 6.5T combo coming in new at £130 ish. This is sensored and has a reasonable reputation, as long as you steer clear of any attempts to update the firmware - then beware.

Losi is really the best choice I can recommend for your budget and application, get yourself a 6.5T combo.

As Tony mentioned, some people do have issues with firmware updates but they can be quickly resolved. One of the best features when you buy Xcelorin is the after sales support you get with it, typical turnaround is 2-3 days and you'll have it fully repaired and tested or replaced.

i had looked at the losi combo, as it sits in my price range! i do hope to go racing with it, at some point!

so, is updating the firmware for it really that tricky?? i'm pretty computer savvy!!

I've updated the firmware without any problem, but I've seen posts from others who have, for whatever reason, come unstuck and had to send there ESC back to be reset. However, that said, there is no real reason why you should want to update the firmware - so just for safety steer clear.

I'd say race the B44 - it's a race car, and would be wasted as a basher (to bash, I'd want 2WD and a plastic chassis! A B44 would need more maintenance)

There's quite a few options open to you:

Sensored:
Robitronic 5.5 for £75 + a used motor (check the for sale section, there's loads of brushless motors there - they seem to last forever)
Fusion Exceed 6.5T combo (effectively the same speedo as the Robitronic)
Xerun 120A and 60A combos from Hong Kong / evilBay
This Hobbycity/Hobbyking 6.5T equiv. combo

For a slightly greater budget, the new Mamba Max Pro is awesome (it's a bit of a whopper, but should fit in a B44) + any motor you care to try, sensored or not.

Sensorless:
Ezrun 60A combos on evilBay (many to choose from, two types of motor)
Mamba Max speedos of various types
Keda sensorless motors from Giantcod

am guessing the firmware upgrades make some kind of improvement to the performance of the system though?...much like when sony force firmware updates on the ps3!

Any suggestions for a suitable, not overly expensive servo to run along the kit as stated?? (if useful, i'll be using a ko propo ex5ur, with the KR-407S Micro receiver)

Regarding Servo I run a Savox 1258 in my B44 - very popular, although on the expensive side of the equation.

That's about an 8 turn... Little faster than most 8.5 turn motors, but a tad slower than most 7.5 turn motors.
