foam tires for buggy

Hi Peeps,

A kind customer sent me some foam tires for my standard 2.2" rims.
I just had to cut the inner ribs off but they look cool.
I hope i can beat the touring cars tommorow night now
Has anybody else tried foam tires on a buggy?
I used 200mm foam wheels and tires last week and they was ok but car looked a little odd with diddy wheels on and was not handling as i hoped but still was pretty quick

I ran foams on my B44 on carpet last time and they worked well. the mat section I had no grip at all so kinda just threw it over that section, but on the carpet they worked well.

my foams are home made ones from 1/8th oval foams on cut down rims

I showed up with some foams for my CAT SX at Newbury and it freaked everyone out so much they banned them after the first heat I used 1/8th foams on CAT rims with the outer bead cut off. They work bloody superb and last for ages!!!

Schumacher used to do them pre mounted back in the day... T670N (Fronts) and T6710 (Rears).

I just made some up on losi rims, cut all the ribs off the wheels, in the true, mounted the foam (one pair of 40shore rears, do all four wheels), glued them down, trued them to 75mm and radiused.

Those who have tried foams on their buggies at my club, have liked them, as long as it is all carpet.

Page takes a little while to load , but it shows how to get the foam off the wheel with acetone and then put them on the 2.2" rims of your buggy .

That is a very expensive way of getting doams for your buggy but if they last i guess it could be worthwhile.

my foams cost about £12. then a set of wheels to go in them
cheaper than rubber tyres and inserts

ive always thought about doing this... which foams would i need to get??? ive never used a foam tyre before.. so im clueless!

the specific tyre/make/size/shore etc would be usefull.. and where to buy from.

I've seen www.jcracingproducts.co.uk advertising that they distribute Louies RC tires. They do foams for buggies. Has anyone out there tried these? I'd like to get a set if they are any good.

if your going to do it, make sure you got access to a tyre truer, it don't take to long to knock up a set, but don't think it is going to take 30 mins either!!

www.rc-direct.co.uk sells Enetti 1/8th foams in all shores. I used 35 on my CAT front and rear which worked great.

Well i got put in the next to bottom heat tonight which made it tough to get some clean laps but I managed to win the B final with a time that was quick enough to have got in the A.
I soaked the tires in additive a few days before but it still took a lot of additive and scrubbing in on the night but when they was they had massive grip, in fact too much i might say.
I found i had to radius the edges of the tires and glue them on.
they did cone alot and will need skimming before using again but i really enjoyed using them, I think a lot of guys was surprised to see a buggy hacking round like it was on rails.

So i will see if a harder compound will work better.

Oh and Gurdy I am only using foams as i am racing on primafelt carpet like at petit but for touring cars only. The rubber spikes kill the carpet.

For PDA and Worksop etc you dont really have any choice but to run the tires they suggest.

So does any one have a cheap tire truer for sale???

I also need it to fit pan cars 1/8th and 1/10th too. tall ask i think

I shall be trying 40 shore on Sunday, and yes, have rounded the edges to stop it being snatchy.

Seems to me if people are going to be this anal about tires, they should stick to touring cars...

pins work fine 99% in the time indoors IMO

yeah, but work out expensive if your running on 100% carpet.

Also, mini pin tyres are banned from some clubs like mine at Wycombe. We have no choice but to run on foams if want to run or 1/10th buggies.

we banned pins also, as we have to run a mix of buggies and tourers, the pins were spoiling the fun for the tourers.

I must admit, I am well chuffed with my effort of making foams..
