Default Newbie recommendations - 4WD buggy

Hi All.

Years ago I used to own a Tamiya Bigwig and have recently decided to buy another rc car and am looking for some recommendations.

My budget (for a kit, I want to build it myself) is about £150.

I think I would like a 4WD, ideally something that's pretty tough but also reasonably competitive as I have a local track nearby and may pay them a visit in the near future. I am not looking for a super machine, just something that's easy to upgrade and maintain and fairly tough.

I've not driven a rc car for quite a while so a buggy that's easy to control but has some race potential would be spot on.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Cheers

your best of going to your local club to see what everybody else runs then if you do break something your more likely to be able to fix it as for kits the tamiya durga and yokomo b max are around 150 quid ish i think

£150 won't get you far in the world of competitive 4wds these days!

£170 buys you a Yokomo B-Maxx minus all electrics (no motor or speed control) which is a very good car. This is the most basic version and might need a few upgrades. The big problem is that it takes saddle pack batteries which are more expensive.

The same money also buys a Tamiya Durga. This comes with a basic 540 motor but no speed controller (and a 540 won't get you far). Its extremely tough, but needs a lot of upgrades to be effective on the track. Some, like the slipper are expensive but virtually a must have for racing.

Finally there is the HPI Cyber 10B at £180. Like the Durga it needs some expensive upgrades to race.

However.....

If you are willing to go for a 2wd car instead, then the Associated RC10B4 is just £160 for the base version, which is more than enough for club level competition. Furthermore it will cost a lot less to run, is far and away the most popular club car in the UK so you are bound to find spares and setup advice and its really tough.
