silly question on brushless motor

i had a ezrun 35a esc with a ezrun sensorless 9t motor and my esc fan caught fire because i was running it off of 11.1v lipo so i got a team orion vortex 100a esc and it is fast but i dont know if there is a amp limit for motor
can i run this motor with a 100a esc?
and also as i dont race im just wondering what setups do people run like wat volt battery and wat turn motor (im guessing 10.5t) and all that
im running a 9t motor on 11.1v lipo
is that a bit silly should i go down to 7.4 v?

The ESC doesn't put amps into the motor - the motor demands amps from the battery via the ESC. If the motor and ESC are rated for 11.1V, and the setup is running OK at the moment, without excess heat, I imagine it will continue to run OK.

This is a forum populated by racers. We are all running 7.4V. Motors in buggies range from 5.5T to 8.5T.

Personally I don't see the point in 11.1V packs in 1/10th cars at all, because we can massively overpower them on 7.4V!

Firstly you didn't need a new esc - you can just replace the fan. New fans can be had from Maplin and fitting takes 5 mins with a soldering iron......


Still - I used the same Ezrun 9T with the 70A version of the same esc just fine. Running a motor on a higher current rated esc won't damage it so thats fine.

Most people just bashing about seem to favour brushless motors in the 8.5-10.5t region and the supplied motors in most RTR brushless cars fit into that group. One of the reasons for this is that you can then use 3S (11.1v) packs safely. Running 3S with a very fast 4.5t motor is likely to destroy the rotor as it spins too fast - they are only meant for 2S

However, having tried 3S (with the 9T and Orion in fact) I can safely say that its really only better for top speed and than only with a lot of space. Otherwise 7.4V (2S) is plenty.

Sounds sensible to me...

I've never run 11.1v in anything, and I'm sure people enjoy it for the all out speed if you have space to run it in so am not trying to diss it.

But I've always thought that 7.4v works really well in the space that most of us have access to! So judge it on the space you have.

I don't live near an airfield or have access to a massive well kept field, and my eyesight would be terrible at distance so 7.4v works plenty fast enough for me...in the local tesco's carpark late at night was ballistic enough when I tried it!
