IMPORTANT PAYPAL NOTICE - Please read

Right guys, I have just had to ring Paypal regarding a transaction that was on hold,

They told me that the security system just picks out random transactions to do some security checks.
Now whilst I was on the phone they mentioned that the security system is working harder than ever at the moment due to so many suspicious payments going through as a “Gift”

It looks like they may be getting wise to all this gift business guys…….

So my advice would be to use the “personal payment owed” option, which is right next to the GIFT tab.
I would also and not put any sign of a sale transaction in the notes/subject bar.

Most people do a sale through PM’s anyways, so once you have sent payment send your address through PM rather than on Paypal.

Please spread this around all the forums and tell your friends etc etc,

Good. I'm glad they're getting wise to the gift thing. It's a way for a dodgy seller to get money from the buyer without having to send anything. I've always ofered to pay a little more and send properly.

PayPal don't put any charges onto the transaction

No, there are no fees.

The big downside of the gift is that you have NO protection at all.

Everytime I've paid by 'gift' I've paid fee's for doing it.

I think perhaps there are fees if it is from your card? Free from your Paypal balance?

You dont pay Gift fees if you have the balance avaliable in your Paypal account.

If you pay as a gift but have to use your back up source (bank/card/etc) you pay fees.

ive never been charged fees and its always come from my debit card.

ive had recieved money sent as a gift as well as me sending money as a gift and have never been charged so i must have been lucky

I'm surprised that you guys can even pay an amount using the gift option. The gift option doesn't work for paypal users that are not from the uk. When i make payment via paypal, there isn't a gift option at all for me to select.

There is such option for everyone - I know it from my own experience as I'm from Slovak Republic.

From the horses mouth...

You have the option for "Purchase" or "Personal transfer" when you "send money".

Each type has different options.

"Gift" comes under personal transfer, and allows you to choose who pays the fee's.

"Personal transfer


It's free* when you use your PayPal balance or your bank account linked to your PayPal account. There is a charge of

3.4% + £0.20 GBP*

for debit or credit card payments
(either the sender or recipient can pay this fee)."

The * refers to different rates for people receiving various amounts of money per month...reducing in %'s as the per month amounts increase.

The "Purchase" option means the person being paid always pays the fee's.

My paypal balance is always empty and I don't have my bank account linked to my paypal account, therefore I've always paid the fee's as it retrieves funds from my debit card!

Not sure how this fits with your experiences outside the UK. Hope that helps clear it up

Thanks for the replies guys, i'm in my paypal ac now..i've checked, under personal payments, there are shared expenses, payment owed, rental charges and others. There isn't a gift option. Even when i clicked on others, there's no gift option to be seen. Every option under personal payments has charges, it allows me to pay the charges or the receiver paying for the charges.
