Default Pinion gear too tight to get on!

Pinion gear used on my xcelorin (I think its a shumacher one) seems just very slightly too tight to get onto my new novak velocty motor. I thought they are both supposed to be 1/8 inch shafts. Are pinions supposed to be interchangeable? Any ideas how I can solve this?
Thanks

1: Make sure the grub screw is fully out/unwound
2: Make sure there is no hard dried on threadlock inside the pinion hole.
3: Brute force!

OK, all sorted.
I just put a drop of oil on and brushed the end lightly with sandpaper and it's perfect now! thanks
