Default What RTR For my 8 Year Old Son?

Guys need some advice, my 8 year old son still has some of his xmas money left and want's to buy an RC car. He has seen one of those cheap nasty toy rc cars in Tesco but i'm trying to change his mind about it and would like to hear what other options i could show him? It would need to be a full RTR car and on a tight budget he's got £50 now but i'm sure i could put the same again to it for him so around £100

Something off road that he could play around with but also if he wanted to we could take along to the local club for him to have a go at racing

Any thoughts?

Cheers

the maverick cars aren't too bad for the money. Available from any HPI stockist. They do a 4wd buggy or a truck.

also the Ansmann Macnum is OK for the money. The shocks are as bad as the madrat ones, but the bigger truck shell protects them in a crash unlike the madrat.

both will be fine for bashing and spares are pretty cheap.

other than that, a second hand B4 rtr would be good

Ive recently started playing with one of these...

rc18r great fun for driving up and down your drive and on gravel and snow. Few advantages..

Parts are cheap
There pretty undestructable
They look like a real car which is good with younger children
And there currently only £69.95 RTR at DMS racing.

+1 for the Associated 1/18th... top value kit... everything you need (inc radio..) for @ £70..! FTX do a 1/18th Buggy for £100 thereabouts... I've got both, the buggy is better for outside IMO... still tho', the car is capable of a bit of rough stuff too... depends which you prefer the look of really...

You wont go far wrong with any of the maverick range tbh, and for the little bit more you can get a 1/10th scale truck or buggy that will go anywhere.

As good as the Associated 1/18th is it is an 18th and your lad will be limited on where he can run it

Check the maverick range out here

Right at this moment no. They are available everywhere else though including ebay and it's based on the UK available FTX Blaze (and share most of the same parts). I think the only things different are the wheels/bumpers/body. Also the chassis and centre drive shaft on the SC truck is 20mm longer.

It really is an awesome little truck and if you type in the following code you will get another $45 off the order: 016L3

This is PERFECT!

Brushless, 2.4GHz, Truck (loads of protection and absorbing tyres etc) for under £165!

http://www.cmldistribution.co.uk/cml...tId=0000004664

I got a guy at work to get one for his Son at Xmas, he's been out with it everyday and absolutely loves it, not damaged anything and he said it worked perfectly straight away...

Just buy a used Lipo for it and he'll be well sorted!

Default stinger

i have one of these stinger bl
i cannot break it
even when racing ( truck class at bury indoor)
get the bl though not the standard brushed motor version as its gearbox is a little weaker and radio is 27 mhz not 2.4g
ansmanns aint bad either. maybe not quite as tough but still strong enough for any bashing and spares are dirt cheap.

Thanks for all the ideas guys, i took him along to the local club today and i think he's hooked now so looks like it needs to be a 1/10th 4WD Buggy so if anyone can recommend a good starter RTR 1/10th Buggy that would be great

Thanks Again

Really depends on how much you want to spend but these seem good value and you can get lots of spares for them on ebay.

Its basically a copy of the Tamiya Dark Impact.

This is always a good choice:

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...Electric-Buggy

Here's a review/build of the 'pro' kit version, but the only difference are a few aluminum parts.

http://rcevilempire.com/2009/06/revi...ademy-gv2-pro/

Here's a few videos:

Long story short, it's a great car that can be raced with an electronics upgrade, but the stock system is tame enough to teach your son how to drive.
