thinking of racing,what do i need?

hi need a bit of advice.
i have a durga/baldre db01 standard ,plus ive ordered after reading this forum,
slipper clutch
alluminin sus mounts front and rear
front uni drive shafts

i was thinking of just running round the track for a few weeks/month at eden park,before i even think of racing .

so what batteries would i need?and how many would i need?
i have a lipo bal charger.

also motors
i have a tamiya bz 23t and tamiya 302bk esc,or mtroniks 11rv esc
i have a few other brushed motors but not sure what,without digging them out.but by memory,a few mod 27 turn team screams and a 11 turn double maybe.
also 3300kv brushless reedy combo brushless.

also wheels and tyres?
at the moment kit standard ,but getting a bit bald,the tyres not me.

anything im missing?

Tyre-wise, you'll probably be wanting some Schumacher yellow mini-spikes or some green ballistics for the wet.

You should be able to manage with one lipo, as long as you can top it up between runs. Anything around the 5000MaH mark really, but preferably with a high 'C' rating (35 or above).

Out of those motors, I'm guessing the reedy brushless combo is the best option, but I don't know much about that particular set-up.

I'd recommend upgrading at least the rear diff outdrives with metal ones and upgrade to ceramic balls, and the fronts if you can afford it.

Also, if you can afford it, the TRF dampers are a nice upgrade.

Hi Ben, your name is Ben, isn´t it? You have the same nickname on TC as far as i rememeber and we made a deal on some Egress parts many moons ago
As F1END said the metal Outdrives for at least the rear are a wise buy.
The dampers are rather expensive but without a doubt the best dampers Tamiya have ever released! With all these options it would have probably been cheaper to buy a 84100 DB01R. If you really go racing after a few months of practicing the Aeration dampers are a must in my opinion.

yes my names ben and im on tc under the same username.the egress is long gone,sold it to rich D. hes sold it on now to another tc member.still unrun new built

i have some 5000mah lipos ill have to check what c rating they are.
ill get the uprated outdrives ,the 501 ones right?
ill leave the dampers until i race if i decide to.
what difference do the ceramic balls make?also any links?
ill look up the tyres too.

i got the buggy second hand ,like new for £70 ,so i think it may still work out a bit cheaper than the db01r?

Hi Ben

Rather than spending a fortune upgrading your Tamiya, i reckon you`d be best just learning basic skills with it and then buying a good used second hand Associated B44 or such like if you feel you want to compete. It will be much more suited to racing, be competitive out of the box and others wil be able to help you with setup etc too.

Ive never raced at Eden Park so i cant tell you what exactly you will need there. Best pop along to a club meeting and ask some of the other guys.

Tyres can be bought from any of the major online retailers, sponsors of this site or from schumacher themselves direct.

I suspect that most will run them with the medium green inserts from Schumacher. They will need to be superglued onto the rims.

Ceramic balls are much harder than the std steel ones and dont wear out as quickly. They will wear the diff rings more quickly but generally speaking, using them just means a smoother diff for longer thats all. Its just durability.

I cant help electrics wise with what you have got as the numbers dont mean anything to me. Again, they may be more suited to car park bashing than racing. You can pick up a good used speedo on here for £50 now that will run any motor you`re capable of handling. Motor wise, brushless is the way forward, probably start off with a second hand 10.5 if you are new to racing. Most guys use a 6.5 or 5.5 in 4Wd and a 6.5 or 7.5 in 2WD. Lower the number the faster the motor. 5.5 is enough for anyone though.

the more i look at this the more im thinking this car is a money pit.
i could have bought a second hand b44 by now just on the hop ups ive bought,without the initail car cost.and i still need the dampers lol
theres a nice b44 in the trade section now for a ton which is starting to look like a better route?

Thats exactly what im getting at. If you watch Paul Bradby or Neil Cragg with a B44 then you realise that you dont need a Tamiya to be quick !

I had a B44 and although i do prefer my 511, i can tell you that for £100 you are getting far more than one fifth the car a new Tamiya will cost you for roughly a fifth of the price.

I agree, Rich, that a B44 is a much more competitive car out of the box in comparison to a DB01 but this season i noticed the following: i had a B44 for half of the season and a friend of mine raced the DB01R the whole season. I had to replace CVD´s and other spares about 3 times more that he had to do with his Tamiya. We race on dirt that´s probably why metal tends to wear out that quickly.
Anyway there is a noticeable difference in terms of longlife quality of the metal parts i found and that is probably why they are way cheaper than a compared Tamiya. That´s just my opinion.
For Ben of course it would be a perfect cheap beginner car to take a used B44 and get used to modern race buggies before driving in front with a Tamiya
