I fancy buying an airbrush to have a go at doing some shells, any recommendations?

Also, where's the best place to get the Fastkolour paint from?

The best place to get faskolor is calling it Createx and buying it from the USA.. I have seen it for $2 in the USA, that is what, about 1.20 sterling ?
Createx is the proper stuff, I think Faskolor is just rebranded from createx.

I think DCM has some links to createx paints over here, still cheaper than the faskolor stuff.

Hi, yes Createx is the same stuff, and Createx has a lot more colours, plus other things like colour lightenners, viscosity prolongers, so it don't dry so quick (like you need it with a rush job...) but Faskolor has some nicer colours.

Do a google search for 'Tamiya Spraywork' it's an airbrush and compressor made by tamiya. It runs from a 7.2 volt battery and works a treat. I've had one since the 80's and it still works. The new one looks really nice, although I believe you'll have to buy it from overseas. Still it's very well priced for what you get and you don't need a separate compressor.

they are great for using lacquer based paint but would be underpowered for Createx/Faskolor....

And 2 hours doing drop shadows on four wings, three shells and one undertray gives you cramp BIG time....

Please explain 'Underpowered' ?

Have you used a tamiya SprayWork ? It sprays paint, how can it be underpowered. Is the paint you are refering to really thick or something ? I always found, with various airbrushes that the paint needs to be 'thin'.

Createx/Faskolor, being water based needs to be sprayed at about 30psi upwards without thinning, thinning it can cause it to spider across the surface. I have a 50l 2HP compressor in my spray/workroom and doing drop shadows last night for two hours, that reservoir was needing to be filled every bout 15 mins or so, so the compressor pump kicking in.

The Tamiya Spraywork is designed for use with much lower PSI spraying paint, hence the unit not having a reservoir, the pump is under a lot less pressure.

It is difficult to explain, but if you spray with say Pactra, you can, with some success do shells off cans of air, you try that with Faskolor, and on a TC shell, you will go through two full LARGE cans.

I guess when you say 2 full tanks, you mean tanks of compressed air ?

Anyhow, I don't use the paints you mention, I use mainly custom colour and it works a treat. Graham originally asked for recommendations to 'have a go' rather than I guess taking painting up professionally. To this end I would thoroughly reccomend the Tamiya unit. The bonus is that it's cheap, has the compressor built in so you need never buy an expensive tin of air or a proper compressor.

Just to intervene here.. The tamiya system looks great especially for beginners.. the faskolor paint similarly is nice and easy to use, easy to clean, and great for beginners..

The two dont look like they will work together though unfortunately because of the pressure needed for the faskolor paints.. might work ??

Which I am sure Custom color is, but people NEED to know that if they go the faskolor/createx route, they need a bit more wind in their sails to get the paint spraying nice.

I need to buy some new paints and am considering getting Faskolor / Createx....no idea if my compressor will cut the mustard though. Guess I'll just have to buy a pot and find out!!

I used to use that, but found it unreliable, I bought initialy as it was cheap, but if you want to use the smelly paints, it is a good starter, if you want to use water based paint, you have to up the pressure to suck the paint up out of the jar.

just got one myself fancied trying my hand at spaying was quite impressed with it only got it cos its gravity feed rather than the suction feed i got with my compressor.
i used faskolor paint it came out ok i did thin it mind as ive been reading the cfx paintwork forum for some guidance and they all seem to thin createx/faskolor paints with either IPA (rubbing alcohol) or Johnsons Windex glasscleaner (which is mainly IPA anyway) a good replacment for this btw is Carplan screenwash £2.99 for 5ltrs at halfords....LOL

If you want a cheap air source u can buy an adapter to attach you air hose to a car tyre valve, run it off your spare wheel ! or if you realy feel adventurous get an old rim with tyre on it let the air out drill a hole in the rim to take another valve connect your air-line to 1 valve , connect the other vavle up to a 12v pump and away u go.

Airbrush and air source for less than £20 lets you try your hand without doin your dosh.
