Cheap Brushless and ESC combos on Ebay.. Any good???

Hi people, Oople and RC newbie here, just bought myself a Lazer ZX-5 RTR, few subtle chassis hop-ups and really starting to get to grips with it!!

Was searching through Ebay the other day and came across a load of cheap Brushless and ESC combos Starting at anything from 10p to £60

Now i know and fully understand that 'You get what you pay for' but has anyone actually used one of these things and if so are they any good??

Depends on the make...

If you wanted a cheaper combo set, the Losi Xcelorin sensored systems are quite good value for money, if you have space, as it is quite tall. The mamba 25 is cheap, but has a reputation of being a bit jerky (known as cogging, when starting from stationary) as it is sensorless, so relies more on software updates for tuning (I have not used one though).

I have used a Novak GTB in the past, which were excellent, but quite expensive.

Not sure on the new mamba micro pro....best ask someone who has used one.

Lots of makes, but if you want a good compromise, and are racing, I would get the Losi Sensored speedo and combo.

Ive been wondering about these 'hobbywing' type esc and motor combo's myself- (as per that ebay auction). I have enough high end stuff but wondered what these kind of units would be like for vintage 4WD buggies?? Any suggestions guys? Would it be the esc or the motor that lets you down? Also ive heard the motor is actualy a 380 size but the heat sinks make it a 540 . Does this sound right?

This is true. But still it has enough torque. So don't be worry about that.
In my Durga there is 35A 9t "3in1" combo. I think it was reasonable bying. Some comments: It's almoust water resistant. After some submarining , only ballbearings died. Inside the motor there is one small plastic distance bushing, I do not now why but it broke. I replaced them with ordinary shims. After some modifications, it was possible to use even 6t motor. Vent was out of balance.

The Hobbywings / Ezrun brushless set-ups are the same as the speed passion series. So they are actually pretty good. I've been running the 9t (35amp) esc in my touring car and its reliable and fast. I also have the 5.5 60amp one in my 501x.

While marshalling at the track last night I spotted a 'Duratrax- Evader' running one these units. I spoke with the owner and he said he was very happy with not only the price but the performance also. I kept my eye on it throughout the night and it was killer fast. Funny.
I ventured up to him in the pits and found 3 others running the same units and they were all very happy with them. Sounds like a real bargain if you ask me.

A few people run them at southport in buggies and TC's and there hasnt been any problems so far.

Has anyone tried the Venom Pro 120A esc?
I'm looking to replace the esc and motor in my RTR ZX5 also, I fried the original in an enduro on the weekend: 176 degrees celsius!

The specs on this esc look pretty good, it's sensored and I think it can handle down to a 3.5 turn mod. A mate of mine runs one in 2WD stock (running a 17.5) and he's one of the fastest cars down the main straight and around the entire track.

Having seen the programming board that comes with the esc in action I am very impressed. I hate counting LED sequences and flashes on my GTB - it always seems to flash in a sequence not described in the instruction manual!

There is a combo esc and 17.5 turn motor for quite reasonable money (~$270 here is Australia). I'm even thinking of getting 2 and replacing the GTB in my B44, I just haven't seen too many reviews on it yet.

If anyone can point out a few reviews or has some experience with this esc, share the knowledge!

A 13T with the 35A ESC Ezrun combo is a fun set up for the TT-01 - 100% reliable in the first 6 months so far for me.

Only Speed Passion offer software updates via USB by using the new LCD Programmer or the Brushless Analyser available seperately. This means you can keep your ESC up to the latest version of software.
