Default Who has put lipo in there 501???

I'd just like to know, who has fitted lipo in there 501's

If you have, what packs are you running and whether they are hard or soft cased.

Any pics that you may have to add to this thread may be useful for not only myself but others who run this car.

thanks

Col.

I will try add some pics if I didn't already. I basically made the bottom of the cell posts on my 501X flush with the rest - grinding a flat basically so it didn't stick out at the bottom into the cells.
I am using the Trakpower 3200 hard cased lipos. I've never really taken them out since putting them in - charge in the car (put the car in a sack! lol)
Putting them in I did notice the difference - in a bad way initially. The rear just became very loose, I was on bald tyres being fair but still. I ended up putting lead down the centre under the rear belt and also on the front rear hinge pin brace in between the belt - this made all the difference, bringing the weight back up and improving the balance, the car is now 'ACE'

I run trakpower 4800 in my 501x. further down the side you'll find another post or two about this, with pictures.

yeah just the height is different. To get an easy fit, I put a 1mm spacer under my posts, could maybe do it without but the pins might be a squeeze

Col,

I have Trakpower 3200 in my 501X. I use B44 battery posts, and the packs are held very securely. It also means that if I can run NIMH.

As far as setup goes, I have been working on it for a while, and have it nearly there.

Pre LIPO:
Front - blue AE springs, 35Wt oil, shocks on outside on tower
Rear - silver ae springs, 30wt oil, shocks outside on tower
Long wheelbase
minimum ackerman.
1 shim under front camberlink brace.

Post LIPO:
Front - blue ae springs, 45 wt oil, shocks one hole in from the outside on tower
Rear - silver ae springs - cut down, 40 wt oil, shocks on the inside of th tower
Short wheelbase
Std ackerman
no shims in camberlink braces
No additional weight

Some might think the thicker oil is a strange decision with the lighter car, however it calms down the lively back end, and the car is pretty much dialled now. But there's always room for improvement, so my next thing to try is th 0.5 extra toe in on the rear hubs (rayspeed).

I might have to try that setup. On my car to regain grip I went to kit yellow springs and 25wt oil in the rear on the standard big-hole piston.

You can have a go on Sunday Jimmy after the meeting, if you're at York.

Default 3200 - 4600 big difference?

Guys, can I just ask.. apart from the size and extension to run time which is not really a huge issue these days is there any performance issue between the two (3200 & 4800's)?

I'm going with the 3200's with a 6.5T brushless set-up. Should be ok shouldn't it?

Cheers

Tbh, i havnt got the lipo, as yet.. But a 6.5 would be ideal... Lipo will give it more power so should balance it like for like.. i.e a similar car running nimh's would prob use a 5.5 etc.

My setup uses a 4.5r ((ooooh i hear you say lol ))lol but i have the tx acceleration throttle curve turned down to 50% and the the slipper giving just a little, and as a bonus my cells are never charged to capacity. My cells (ep4200's) usually come of the charger showing anywhere from 8.8 to 9.o volts charged at 4 to 5 amps and they are perfect, my car is fast, but its only like for like with other cars. However this weeekend at bury, i let the cells peak and they came off the charger showing very high 9.4 volts. Ca was ballistic lol. The bonus of running a faster motor , comes in when i see local kids playing with there cheaper end nitros.... Trf comes out, with everything on the max lol....

my 3600 30c trakpower is about 0.2mm too high to fit under the slipper, it just fouls the heatshrink.

Im considering giving a go at shimming up the centre transmission a small amount to see if I can get it to fit. Also with the Tategoo shell it looks like it might just be possible to mount a lipo across the car, but will need to add an extra pulley near the center transmission to get the belt to run level with the chassis to pull it out of the way of the lipo which would be touching the top deck.

Alternatively you might be able to switch it and move the belt upwards to the top deck and get the lipo mounted lower, this would put the belt through more of an angle change and you would probably need a longer belt as a result.

Well, other than the battery posts I need to get from my parents place I finished by bling 501 worlds this afternoon (All fancy blue trf titanium turnbuckles, titanium screw kits from a 416, new gold HL dampers, new WO driveshafts, very nice!!) and its going to come out about bang on the minimum weight without lead when running tp 3200 saddles (I use a tateego shell too, not sure what weight diff it makes tothe tamiya one), so ideally want a setup without lead!

So basically, how do I cut down rear springs? To try to shorten them to get a good base rideheight! How do you then flatten the end again??

Setup wise was going for worlds standard (soft rear springs) but heavish oil, 40wt, on the back,, along with the hard anti roll bar. Could do with shortening the rear springs slightly though, so any help appreciated??

I have not went lipo as of yet. Yet my brushless system is fast enough to make up the difference hopefully.
