Do Kyosho still do Mini Infernos? I have an ST and it is a very decent little truck out of the box, they were well under £100 when I got it, runs on AAs or you can upgrade to a rechargeable pack. Only real issue I have with it is that the standard steering servo doesn't reach full lock so the steering is a bit poor indoors.
Other than that the only other thing I have had that is small and cheap is a Losi Mini-T, they handle very well out of the box and also run on AAs or can be upgraded. Unfortunately all the decent 1/10th RTR's are in the £150-£200 mark. |

Or how about the Thunder Tiger ZK2, they're £68 RTR, ok it's another micro, but it's pretty strong.
Most RTR only come with a slow charger tho, so could be worth him getting a fast charger in his budget too. |

The smacker is a good car for a youngster, its pretty tough and its quite quick. (probably too quick still for a 6yo)
You could get a cheap tamiya like the grasshopper (the combo deals are around £99 at most retailers like dms / fusion etc). The grasshopper comes with the 380 motor and its plenty fast enough for a 6yo. It does mean building the car, but the grasshopeer is soo easy to build. (1.5 hours). It would be a far more interesting for the father and son to build it together. |

how about a Maverick Atom, micro car? They are around £70 all in and pretty capable. Or go for the blaze RTR but they are around £120.
Micro's are ideal for yougsters as they aren't quite as quick and the strength for their size is much better than a 10th scale. Does he intend to take his son racing? If so what clubs are in his area?

how about one of these then? pretty much on budget
http://www.mirageracing.com/piw.php?partNo=MV12201 they also do a trugy version for £115 which would be better for garden bashing, and to convert it back to a buggy for club racing would only require the wheels/tyres as the chassis is the same as the buggy.
